Twenty-Seven Thousand Subscribers

Today we crossed a new threshold. We have now have over 27,000 subscribers in our e-course. Most of the credit for the ever-expanding number of subscribers goes to my disciple, Amala Purana Das, who is funding an aggressive advertising campaign on the internet. Of course we must also give credit to Damodar Das who produced a new video of my invitation which everyone sees after they respond to the advertising. And everyone else who has spread the word about the Ultimate Self Realization course also deserves credit.

I am now requesting all of my 27,000 subscribers to do everything possible to promote this course so that we will have millions and then billions of sincere souls enrolled in this course getting the guidance they need how to go back to Godhead and thus escape their endless suffering in the cycle of birth and death.

Question: Vegetable Milk Substitute?

Hare Krishna!
My name is Radhika Gupta and I am currently a college student at the University of Maryland. I have been a member of the ISKCON DC temple for my entire life, and I wanted to reach out to other ISKCON temples about the possibility of using plant based milks/ghee substitutes and what the process was to make this happen. Our beliefs stand for the ethical treatment of animals but unfortunately, the buying and consumption of dairy milk supports the dairy system which is very unethical and cruel. In the past, cows were treated with respect, but unfortunately, it is not the same situation at all and indirectly our temples are supporting the process, whether we are making it in prasadam or using milk to wash deities. I am including the link that reveals the current state of dairy farms in case its not known. If there is someone I can talk to about this, please let me know, as I want to make sure we are all following the correct path and making the correct decisions.

Thank you, Radhika Gupta

Answer: No Substitute for Cow's Milk

From: London

My Dear Radhika,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

It is laudable that you want to protect the cows. However, plant based milk substitutes will not give us longevity like milk. Nor will they give us the finer brain tissues for understanding transcendental knowledge.

Our mission is to stop all cow slaughter and introduce cow protection all over the world. But before that is accomplished Srila Prabhupada has authorized is to take milk from the karmi farms as is evidenced in the following letter to Makhanlal Das:

"I am so glad to hear that, because the sales manager of Darigold dairy is sympathetic to our Krishna Consciousness movement, you are being supplied 20 gallons of fresh milk weekly and free of charge." from at letter to: Makhanlal -- Los Angeles 14 July, 1971

There is no such thing as a vegetable substitute for milk. Milk is essential for developing finer brain tissues for Vedic understanding. Here’s more of Srila Prabhupada says regarding milk:

"Milk is an animal product. It is the blood of the cow changed only. But the milk is not drunk by the cow. She is delivering the milk, but she's not taking, because it is not allotted for it. By nature's way. So you have to take. Milk is made for man, so you take the milk. Let her live and supply you milk continually." from a lecture on Sri Brahma-samhita, Verse 32 -- New York, July 26, 1971

"Milk is compared to nectar, which one can drink to become immortal. Of course, simply drinking milk will not make one immortal, but it can increase the duration of one's life. In modern civilization, men do not think milk to be important, and therefore they do not live very long. Although in this age men can live up to one hundred years, their duration of life is reduced because they do not drink large quantities of milk. This is a sign of Kali-yuga.” from Srila Prabhupada's purport to Srimad Bhagavtam 8.6.12

I agree that the cruel treatment of cows is wrong. But by drinking the milk of these cows we will get sufficient intelligence how to make the world Krishna conscious and give protection to all the world’s cows. This is called “Using a thorn to remove a thorn."

In conclusion, I appreciate very much your desire to protect the cows. The real solution is to establish cow protection dairies all over the world so that the whole world can drink large quantities of milk from protected
cows.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.
Your ever well-wisher,
Sankarshan Das Adhikari
