Let Us Embrace this Most Potent Instruction

Image
It is very wonderfully stated in Srimad Bhagavatam, Tenth Canto, Chapter 14, Text 8 as follows: tat te 'nukampāṁ su-samīkṣamāṇo bhuñjāna evātma-kṛtaṁ vipākam hṛd-vāg-vapurbhir vidadhan namas te jīveta yo mukti-pade sa dāya-bhāk "My dear Lord, one who earnestly waits for You to bestow Your causeless mercy upon him, all the while patiently suffering the reactions of his past misdeeds and offering You respectful obeisances with his heart, words and body, is surely eligible for liberation, for it has become his rightful claim." Therefore let us fully embrace this instruction and reap the unlimited benefits that it bestows upon us! You Can Be an Agent for World Deliverance

Here is how you can be agent for the deliverance of the fallen souls of this material world back to home, back to Godhead. All you have to do is feelingly offer this prayer from the Srimad Bhagavatam in the service of the Lord. svasty astu viśvasya khalaḥ prasīdatāṁ dhyāyantu bhūtāni śivaṁ mitho dhiyā manaś ca bhadraṁ bhajatād adhokṣaje āveśyatāṁ no matir apy ahaitukī "May there be good fortune throughout the universe, and may all envious persons be pacified. May all living entities become calm by practicing bhakti-yoga, for by accepting devotional service they will think of each other's welfare. Therefore let us all engage in the service of the supreme transcendence, Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa, and always remain absorbed in thought of Him". In Chapter 10, Verse 25 of the Bhagavad-gita Lord Sri Krishna says, "yajñānāṁ japa-yajño 'smi--Of sacrifices I am the chanting of the holy names, japa." How Old Are You?

Image
If somebody asks how old you are, you can tell them how old your body is but that your body is not your actual self. You can tell that your real identity is that you are a spiritual being whose age is infinity and that in spite of being unlimitedly old you are an eternal youth. And then you can tell them that if they will chant the Hare Krishna mantra they can also realize this about themselves. Krishna is the Oldest Person and the Youngest Person

Image
I had the unlimited good fortune of sitting at the lotus feet of Srila Prabhupada hearing him give a lecture on March 2, 1975 in Atllanta, Georgia USA. In this lecture he explained as follows: "Just like Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Being. He must be very old because He is the original person. But the Brahma-saṁhitā says, advaita acyuta anādi ananta-rūpam ādyaṁ purāṇa-puruṣa nava-yauvanaṁ ca [Bs. 5.33]. Purāṇa-puruṣa, the oldest person, but you will find Him nava-yauvanaṁ ca, always a fresh youth. That is God." Here is the verse that he quoted from: "advaitam acyutam anādim ananta-rūpam ādyaṁ purāṇa-puruṣaṁ nava-yauvanaṁ ca vedeṣu durlabham adurlabham ātma-bhaktau govindam ādi-puruṣaṁ tam ahaṁ bhajāmi I worship Govinda, the primeval Lord, who is inaccessible to the Vedas, but obtainable by pure unalloyed devotion of the soul, who is without a second, who is not subject to decay, is without a beginning, whose form is endless, who is the beginning, and the eternal puruṣa; yet He

Drought Has Come to Our Home in Austin, Texas USA

Image
Drought is one of the symptoms of this materialistic age of Kali. The more that people become godless, the more that nature restricts the natural supplies like food and water. In this connection Srila Prabhupada writes as follows in his purport to Srimad Bhagavatam, Ninth Canto, Chapter 1, Text 17: "In these days of drought, people can gain relief from scarcity of rain and food by the simple method of the Hare Kṛṣṇa yajña. Indeed, this can relieve all of human society. At present there are droughts throughout Europe and America, and people are suffering, but if people take this Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement seriously, if they stop their sinful activities and chant the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra, all their problems will be solved without difficulty." Thus we are requesting everyone all over the world to take up the regular chanting of the Hare Krishna mahamantra. Sankarshan Das Adhikari This Is Usually a Flowing River Near Austin. Why Would Krishna Agree to Be Tied Up?

Image
One may wonder why would Krishna who is the Supreme All-Powerful Personality of Godhead allowed Himself to be bound with a rope by Mother Yasoda. To help us understand this Srila Prabhupada gives us this nice example in lecture he gave on the Srimad Bhagavatam in Los Angeles on June 5, 1976: One may question that... They may neglect that "If Kṛṣṇa is God, why mother Yaśodā is binding Him?" But he does not know that is a pleasure. That is a pleasure. There are many instances. I'll cite one instance that there was a big prime minister in England, Gladstone. Perhaps you have heard the name. Queen Victoria's prime minister. So somebody came to see him, and the servant informed him that "The prime minister is little busy. You wait." So he was waiting. One hour passed, and still no message. Then he opened the door. He wanted to see what the prime minister is doing. He saw that the prime minister has become a horse, and his grandchildren driving him. That is enjo

Krishna Consciousness is Being Full of Bliss

Image
Srila Prabhupada has explained, "This Krishna consciousness is simply full of bliss. Nobody should become morose. If he's feeling morose, then it is lack of Krishna consciousness." So from this we can understand that if we are feeling unhappy it is not due to the external circumstances we find ourselves in. Our unhappiness is simply due to our lack of Krishna consciousness. If we are always Krishna conscious, we will always be in a state of bliss. Here is Something to Aspire For

Image
Srila Prabhupada has written as follows in his purport to Srimad Bhagavatam, Second Canto, Chapter 8, Text 5: "It is said that a single pure devotee of the Lord can deliver all the fallen souls of the world. Thus one who is actually in the confidence of a pure devotee like Narada or Sukadeva Gosvami and thus is empowered by one's spiritual master, as Narada was by Brahmaji, can not only deliver himself from the clutches of maya, or illusion, but can deliver the whole world by his pure and empowered devotional strength." This is certainly something to hanker for, to pray for. "My Dear Lord Sri Krishna, kindly bless that I can be your spotlessly pure devotee fully empowered to save all of the fallen, conditioning souls who are suffering here in this material world in the cycle of birth. Please bless that I can deliver them all back to Your eternal abode." This reminds of a song by Bhaktivinode Thakur in which he sings: "kabe ha’be bolo se-dina āmār (āmār

We Must All Be Prepared for Death

In this material world death can come at any time. And as we get older death comes closer. I Was Probably an Indian in My Previous Birth

Image
In a letter that Srila Prabhupada wrote to one his American disciples in 1967 he said, "Lord Caitanya wants that this movement should be spread in the western countries, so most probably in your previous births you were all Indians and cultivated this Krishna Consciousness. Now Lord Caitanya has placed you in the western part of the world so that you can now combine together and broadcast the holy message all over the world." This rings true with me because the first time I went to India in the early 80's when I was a young brahmacari I was overwhelmed with the strong feeling that I had returned to my home. Now that I have been given the duty by spiritual master, Srila Prabhupada, to make the world Krishna consciousness I am requesting all of you, my readers, to also dedicate yourselves to th Krishnization of the entire Planet Earth. The more we give Krishna, the more we get Krishna. Thus those who are highly advanced in Krishna consciousness are obsessed with the burning desire to give Krishna to all of the fallen souls who are rotting in this material existence so that they can all go back to Home, back to Godhead. Such a devotee fully experiences the unlimitedly ecstatic intimate personal association of Lord Sri Krishna at every minute. The way to become qualified to attain this unlimitedly ecstatic level of Krishna consciousness is to become a pure chanter of Lord Sri Krishna's unlimitedly sweet transcendental names. In this connection Srila Prabhupada writes as follows in his purport to Sri Caitanya Caritamrita, Adi Lila, Chapter 7, Text 83: "A sincere student aurally receives the holy name from the spiritual master, and after being initiated he follows the regulative principles given by the spiritual master. There is No Limit to the Extent of My Good Fortune!

I cannot even begin to estimate the unlimited extent of my good fortune that on 12 August 1971 Srila Prabhupada wrote me and two others accepting us as his duly initiated disciples. I happily discarded my Stephen Bridge identity embracing my new identity as Sankarshan Das. Here is that letter that is worth more than all of the gold, rubies and diamonds in the universe: London 12 August, 1971 My Dear Sons, Please accept my blessings. Upon the recommendation of His Grace Visnujana Maharaja I have gladly consented to accept you three as my duly initiated disciples. Your beads are duly chanted on by me and are enclosed herewith. The Appearance Day of Lord Nrsimhadeva

Image
Just as Lord Nrsimhadeva protected His devotee Prahlada from the wrath of his demoniac father Hiraṇyakaśipu, He also protects from danger His devotees who take shelter of Him. We especially remember Him and praise Him today, the day of His appearance with the following prayer: tava kara-kamala-vare nakham adbhuta-śṛṅgaṁ dalita-hiraṇyakaśipu-tanu-bhṛṅgam keśava dhṛta-narahari-rūpa jaya jagadīśa hare "O Keśava! O Lord of the universe! O Lord Hari who have assumed the form of half-man, half-lion! All glories to You! Just as one can easily crush a wasp between one's fingernails, so in the same way the body of the wasplike demon Hiraṇyakaśipu has been ripped apart by the wonderful pointed nails on Your beautiful lotus hands." Many years ago in 1972 or 1973 when there was an armed robbery at our ISKCON temple in Miami, Florida USA I loudly called out the name "Nrsimhadeva" and very soon the armed bandits were running scared into the dark night. So I know from first

Whole World is Waiting to Be Awakened

In a lecture given on 7 January 1973 in Mumbai, India Srila Prabhupada described that the whole world is waiting to be awakened to Krishna consciousness. This means that all of those devotees who fully dedicate their lives for telling everyone about Krishna will go down in history as messiahs, as the saviors of the world. The Bull Who Refused to Be Slaughtered

Image
Here is the heart shattering true story of the bull who refused to be slaughtered: One day while a butcher was working in a slaughterhouse. killing animals with his axe, he happened to see something very unusual that made him scared and astonished. That day a large bull was brought in a large truck to the slaughterhouse to be killed by him and his friends. The bull refused to come out of the truck, even after heavy beating with sticks by the butchers. This butcher felt the bull knew exactly what they were trying to do to him, and so was screaming and trying to hit them with his huge horns. They tried everything they could, and the bull still didn’t move an inch. Then one of the butchers tied a chain around the bull’s neck and the other end to a post next to the entrance. Then the truck was driven forward. In this way, the bull had no other option but to jump down from the truck. He hurt himself badly, which made him even angrier. Somehow they pushed the bull inside the building, and

How to Conquer Over Sleep

Image
In his purport to Bhagavad-gita, Chapter 1, Text 24 Srila Prabhupada describes how to conquer sleep. Here is what he has written: "In this verse Arjuna is referred to as Guḍākeśa. Guḍākā means sleep, and one who conquers sleep is called guḍākeśa. Sleep also means ignorance. So Arjuna conquered both sleep and ignorance because of his friendship with Kṛṣṇa. As a great devotee of Kṛṣṇa, he could not forget Kṛṣṇa even for a moment, because that is the nature of a devotee. Either in waking or in sleep, a devotee of the Lord can never be free from thinking of Kṛṣṇa's name, form, qualities and pastimes. Thus a devotee of Kṛṣṇa can conquer both sleep and ignorance simply by thinking of Kṛṣṇa constantly. This is called Kṛṣṇa consciousness, or samādhi." So let us practice this art of always thinking of Krishna so that we can completely conquer over sleep.
