Cast Off Your Shell

Cast off your shell of bodily identification and come forth as who you really are, the eternal spirit-soul servant of Krishna. Why remain in illusion suffering unnecessarily the pangs of birth, death, old age, and disease when you could be swimming at every minute in an ocean of unlimited bliss? It's time now for you to stop being a fool, to use your intelligence and claim your original birthright as an eternal associate servitor of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Question: Karmic Destiny or Free Will?

Hare Krishna, Srila Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances at your lotus feet.

My question is: If everything is destined to happen in life, then what is the significance of karma? If we have no control over karmic reactions of our past lives and we suffer or enjoy them in our present one, then why it is said that we should continue doing our karma in our current life?

Secondly, what is meant by free will that Lord Krishna has given us? How could I understand that any decision that I take now is a past life karmic reaction or my current free will?

Requesting you to please guide me to progress in my spiritual endeavors.

Many many thanks.

Your humble maidservant,
Priya

Answer: Free Will by the Mercy of Guru and Krishna

As long as we are in material consciousness we remain a slave of destiny under the tight grip of the law of karma. We are simply being carried along like on a karmic conveyor belt being forced to act strictly in accordance with our karma, which is the sum total reaction from our previous activities. In other words, in this state we have absolutely no free will.

But if by the combined mercy of Krishna and the bona fide spiritual master we receive the seed of bhakti planted in our hearts, we are blessed with the opportunity to activate our free will and opt out of the karmic nightmare. Out of thousands and millions of souls who are blessed with this seed, only a very small number take advantage of it and liberate themselves eternally from the karmic cycle of repeated birth and death.

So, I hope and pray that you will be one of those most intelligent and fortunate souls who will take advantage of this opportunity to activate your free will and get out of the cycle of birth and death and return home, back to Godhead.
