What to Do If Your Get Up and Go Got Up and Went?

Sometimes in the neophyte stage the devotee may sometimes lose his enthusiasm for engaging in devotional service. His get up and go got up and went. So what is the solution?

The first thing to understand in this connection is that it was Srila Prabhupada's unlimited enthusiasm that empowered thousands of boys and girls to practice Krishna consciousness and push forward the Krishna consciousness movement all over the world. Those devotees were so enthusiastic for Krishna consciousness that those who associated with them also became enthusiastic.

This happens because we become like those with whom we associate. So if we associate with enthusiastic devotees we will also become enthusiastic. If we ever lose our enthusiasm the easy solution is to seek out and associate with those devotees who are enthusiastic. In this way our enthusiasm will be rekindled.

As spiritual beings we already have unlimited enthusiasm for Krishna bhakti sleeping within us. The difficulty is that our enthusiasm is now covered by the three modes of material nature. This difficulty is easily surmounted by transcendental association.

In the Nectar of Instruction is teaching us how important is to be enthusiastic for practicing Krishna consciousness.

One should accept this opportunity to return home, back to Godhead, very enthusiastically. Without enthusiasm, one cannot be successful. Even in the material world one has to be very enthusiastic in his particular field of activity in order to become successful. A student, businessman, artist or anyone else who wants success in his line must be enthusiastic. Similarly, one has to be very enthusiastic in devotional service. Enthusiasm means action, but action for whom? The answer is that one should always act for Kṛṣṇa—kṛṣṇārthe akhila-ceṣṭā (Cc Madhya 22.126)

So if your get up and go ever got up and went and you want to get it back, you can do so by the power of transcendental association. Even if you are not physically in the association of enthusiastic devotees, just by remembering them you will be blessed with enthusiasm by the power of their association.

Dear Gurudev, my parents are still having difficulty accepting that Lord Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. I have made several attempts—trying to explain to them myself and also bringing them to Bhāgavatam classes. I requested a senior devotee at the temple to explain to them as well, but it has still been in vain.

They believe that the worship of demigods is best and continue to do so.

In the beginning, they were fully against my practicing Krishna consciousness. Now they are not against it, but sometimes there are clashes. I am trying my best to maintain balance, since I do not want them to stop going to the temple or to lose the association of devotees.

What can I do in such a situation?

Let them continue. Don't pressure them. We are better demigod worshippers than they are because just as by watering the root of all tree all the leaves and branches are watered, by worshipping Krishna, Who is the root of alll existence, we are automatically worshipping and the getting the blessings of all of the thirty-three million demigods. In fact, the demigods are so pleased with us that they are worshipping us.
