Why Do We Exist?

Why do we exist? Are we simply a product of Darwinian evolution? And if we are, does that mean that we are simply cogs in the cosmic evolutionary machine? And if that is true, why does the cosmos exist? When we ask such questions we wonder where to find the answers. How will we discover the purpose and meaning of our existence?

The existentialists say that life has no meaning, that we simply imagine life has meaning in order to somehow or other get by. But if life has no meaning, it would not make sense for us to yearn to discover its meaning. If it were truly meaningless as the existentialists propose, we would be content with meaninglessness. But we are not content at all with meaninglessness. So what makes more sense is that we yearn to discover life's meaning because it does in fact have meaning. This indeed then is the proper understanding of reality.

So how do we discover it's meaning? It is not difficult. Simply we have to sincerely yearn to discover life's meaning, and it will be revealed to us. It's as simple as that. Ask and it will be given. Knock and the door will open.

Rev up your existence with a solid daily dose of reality. Tune your consciousness in every morning through transcendental meditation on the ultimate source of everything. According to the Vedic wisdom the most powerful meditational technique for this age is to chant the Hare Krishna mahamantra. Chant it every morning with devotion, and you will gradually transformed into a fully enlightened spiritual being. You'll be smiling all the way.

Question: Krishna and Shiva Both Worshipped?

I have been following your teachings and would love to get things clarified just a little bit. Although I don't know much about Lord Krishna, I am trying to take up this path. I would love to know if Lord Krishna and Lord Shiva are the same. And I would love to know if Lord Shiva and Lord Krishna can be worshipped at the same time.

Answer: Watering the Root Waters the Entire Tree

It is good that you are seeking clarification because it is not good to traverse even the best of paths in the dark. According to the conclusion of the Vedic wisdom Lord Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the source of everyone and everything. Lord Shiva is a very powerful servant of Krishna who is in charge of the destruction of the material world at the time of cosmic annihilation. Krishna is compared to milk and Shiva is compared to yogurt. Yogurt is nothing but a transformation of milk. So in that sense, because Shiva is emanated from Krishna, Krishna and Shiva are the same. But as milk can transformed into yogurt while yogurt cannot be transformed into milk, there is also a difference between them. In other words, while Lord Shiva is a manifestation of Krishna, it is not that Lord Krishna is manifestation of Lord Shiva.

Krishna is the Supreme Lord from whom everything is coming and Lord Shiva is the topmost of His devotees. Just as by watering the root of a tree all the leaves and branches are nourished, by worshipping Krishna Shiva is automatically given the best worship. So there is no need to worship both of them. It is therefore advised in the Vedic wisdom that we should direct 100% of our worship to Lord Krishna. Since Krishna is the root cause of everything, when we worship Krishna we give the best honor and service to Lord Shiva and to all living beings within the total existence.
