Srila Gurudev,Please accept my humble obeisances!
All glories to Srila Gurudev and Srimati Gurumataji!
All glories to Srila Prabhupada!
We are trying to prepare our consciousness in the right mood to receive Your Grace on 10th October. Srila Gurudev, I have had a lingering question for a long time. I feel it is my mind’s play.
I knew theoretically that chanting the Hare Krishna Maha mantra is actually begging for pure devotion. Still, as my understanding is theoretical, for inspiration, along with chanting Hare Krishna, I also try to remember the meaning: "Oh! Radha Krishna, please bless me with pure devotion .” Whenever I remember to pray like that, I get inspiration.
But my mind plays in such a way that it tells me that if I pray for my pure devotion, it is not purely selfless, so I should pray, “ Oh! Radha Krishna, please bless everyone with pure devotion.” So, based on my mind, I often remember, “ Please bless everyone with pure devotion,” rather than “ please bless me with pure devotion.” I knew the word “ everyone “included “ me “ also, so I was covered.
But mind again play; it will, say "the actual meaning of the mantra, as Srila Prabhupada says, is “ please bless me with pure devotion “; then mind tells ; “ why are you altering the meaning of the mantra?” . So, for few days ; I again remember; “ Please bless me with pure devotion.” This goes back and forth.
In one question and answer , I read your grace said; “ there is no need for special prayer.” - chanting Hare Krishna is actually begging for pure devotion. Srila Gurudev , as a neophyte devotee ; for inspiration; I require to remember the meaning also for getting inspiration. So, I become confused.
Your Grace can completely eradicate my confusion. Kindly enlighten me, what is the best mood i keep or remember , so I can give up my selfishness , get inspired and align with paramapara teachings.
Your servant ,
Always holding unto your lotus feet,
Hare Krishna Das
Answer
From: Pretoria, South AfricaMy Dear Hare Krishna Das,
Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Śrīla Prabhupāda.
This is a very wonderful question. Chanting Hare Krishna is simply praying that we can become pure devotees. This is perfect and complete in itself completely free from even the slightest tinge of selfishness. When this pure devotion is awakened in the heart of the living being it naturally includes the deliverance of the fallen souls.
We do also sometimes pray for the deliverance of all living beings in the Nrimha prayers: bahir nrsimha hrdaye nrsimha. But there's no need to mix this in our chanting of the Hare Krishna mantra, because pure chanting of Hare Krishna automatically includes the deliverance of all the fallen souls.
I hope this meets you in the best of health and in a cheerful mood.
Your ever well-wisher,
Sankarshan Das Adhikari
How I Came to Krishna Consciousness
In a world obsessed with money, fame, and fleeting pleasures—leading nowhere but to the grave or the crematorium—I walked away. Life felt so meaningless, I couldn’t stand it. This is the true story of how I turned my back on the American materialistic dream and discovered something far greater: Krishna consciousness. A gripping journey of inner revolution and a call to awaken a world civilization on the edge of collapse.Read My Memoir You'll Love It!
