We Have to Pull In the Anchor

There is very instructive story given by Srila Prabhupada in Elevation to Krishna Consciousness:

"Without looking to Kṛṣṇa's lotus feet, all religious, social or political endeavors will fail. It is not possible to make progress as long as our desires are anchored in the material world. In this regard, there is a story of a bridegroom's party who had to go to the bride's house down the river. It was settled that they would start at night by boat and reach the destination early in the morning. Therefore at night, after supper, the jubilant party got aboard a boat, made themselves comfortable and instructed the boatmen to start. Since all the members of the party were seated comfortably, and since the river breeze was very pleasant, they slept soundly that night. In the morning they all got up early, but to their astonishment they saw that the boat had not moved an inch toward the destination, even though the boatmen had rowed vigorously all night long. Finally, after inquiring, they found that despite the boatmen's rowing, the boat had not moved because they had failed to raise the anchor. The marriage ceremony was thus spoiled because of a foolish mistake.
"Our present civilization is therefore a mistaken civilization because the mistaken leaders have forgotten to raise the anchor of attachment. Instead, the anchor is being more and more firmly fixed because they have structured the social order on the basis of sense gratification."

So instead of being anchored in sense gratification we have to anchor ourselves in meditation on our supremely beautiful, most merciful Lord Krishna. This will save us from the clutches of maya.

Questions and Answers

Hare Krishna!

Reading the books of Srila Prabhupada and listening to the lectures of His Divine Grace and other devotees, I got to know that we are suffering here in this material world because we left Lord Sri Krishna and wanted to enjoy independently. I also got to know that because Lord Sri Krishna is the supreme enjoyer and I am His part and parcel, I also wish to enjoy.

But my query is, if I am the part and parcel of the Supreme Personality of Godhead and am eternally His servant, why did this wrong feeling of enjoying independently came into my mind and why did it not come to the mind of other living entities who never had to fall into the material existence?

Please forgive me if I made any offense, I did not mean to make any offenses.

My Dear Savio,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Love cannot exist without free will. Therefore Krishna gives us the free will to love Him or leave Him. Since free will exists there has to be the possibility of misusing it. What
would be the possibility? It would have to be the smallest possible number, which is one divided by infinity. And if
we apply that possibility to the infinite number of living entities in the spiritual world we end up having an infinite number of living beings who fall down into the material world.

That’s how we got here. We can easily go back by the simple act of surrendering to Krishna.

There is no offense. I am very glad that you asked this very important question.

I hope this meets you in the best of health.
Your ever well-wisher,
