The Bastardization of Sacred Sex

In Vedic culture sex is sacred. This is why Krishna says in the Bhagavad-gita, Chapter 7, Text 11:

kāmo 'smi bharatarṣabha
I am sex life which is not cont\rary to religious principles, O lord of the Bhāratas [Arjuna].

In Vedic culture sex is a divine act for bringing saintly children into the world. In this regard Srila Prabhupada has explained:

"The higher castes, the brāhmaṇas, kṣatriyas especially, and the vaiśyas also, they must observe the dāsa-veda saṁskāra, ten kinds of reformatory methods. The first method is garbādhāna-saṁskāra. Before giving birth to a child. There is a ceremony which is called garbādhāna-saṁskāra, and it is stated in the śāstras that if the higher castes do not perform the garbādhāna-saṁskāra and beget children like cats and dog, then he immediately comes to the position of śūdra. These are the sastric injunction. There are twenty kinds of dharma śāstra, so they have to be followed. That is human society. Not that to live like animal. That is human society." Srila Prabhupada has given us a simplified version of the garbādhāna-saṁskāra. Before the husband and wife combine in sexual intercourse for having a child they first get the blessings of their spiritual master for doing so. Then they try for a child once in a month 4-6 days after the woman's menstrual cycle and after they have both chanted at least 50 rounds of Hare Krishna japa mala. This 4-6 days time period is instructed because this is the most likely time for the wife to become pregnant.

In this way they will get a saintly child who is inclined to be a devotee of Krishna. Otherwise if they do not follow this instruction they will children who are not inclined to surrender to Krishna.

In this modern day society sex has been bastardized, dragged down from it's sacred position to be no more that scratching an itch, to be no more that something one does for entertainment within marriage or outside of marriage. The man and woman wonder what they will do for entertainment one evening. Should they watch a TV show or have sex or maybe both? In this way that which Krishna says is His very self has been dragged down to the hogs and dogs platform.

All glories to Srila Prabhupad,

Guru Maharaja, today when I conversed with one of my friends she asked about your today's email that what is written in it and what is meaning of it I explained her about the Gaudiya Vaishnava philosophy. That she understood and she gave a very nice response.

But she posed a question: "I have been praying to God since last three years to fulfill my wishes but none of my wishes have been fulfilled. So now I'm wondering whether God is listening to me or not or whether God exists or not."

To which I answered: "We need to have patience for what we have prayed for. Is the thing for which we are praying for good for us or not? God want us to gain more patience. We just need to have faith in God because He supremely intelligent and the plans made by Him never go wrong and are for our good and benefit."

Guru Maharaj, please guide me whether I said it right or not, or whether I should correct what I said. Please guide me.

What you have answered is good, but it is incomplete. I am very pleased with you that you are preaching. You should have answered her further as follows:

God is not our order supplier, that we ask Him to give us we want and expect Him to prove His existence by fulfilling our deisre. In this way we are taking the position of master and expecting Him to take the position of being our servant. This is a backwards understanding. Instead of asking Him to be our servant we should pray to Him begging to reveal to us how we can be His servant. When we pray to Him like this He will definitely reciprocate with us and reveal to us how we can be His servant.

In this way we be liberated from all the miseries of material existence and live forever in the spiritual dimension which is eternal, full of knowledge, and full of bliss. Who can ask for something better than this?

When we fully embrace this mood we see that all our desires are being fulfilled. But is not that we can make a show of devotion and expect God to give us whatever we want. If we have such a cheating mentality Krishna will immediately see this and will reciprocate with us in a way to teach us a lesson.
