Big Monkey--Big, Big Belly
22 December 2024
There is a Bengali saying that Srila Prabhupada fondly quoted: "Baro baro badare baro baro pet laṅka dingake mata kare het: Big, big monkey, big, big belly—Ceylon jumping, melancholy." Srila Prabhupada applied this to the material scientists who have big, big PhD titles and Nobel Prizes but when it comes to actually explaining things as they are they don't have any idea what they are talking about. They are number one fools and rascals. In a conversation with newspaper reporters on 25 March 1976 in Delhi, India Srila Prabhupada also applied this proverb to the mundane scholars who don't know that the law given by Krishna is to fully surrender to Him:
Big, big scholars, big, big monkey, they are reading Bhagavad-gītā three hundred times daily, but do not know what is law. This is going on. In Bengali there is a saying, "Big, big monkey, big, big belly, Ceylon jumping, melancholy." You know the monkey, big monkey, Hanumānjī. He jumped over. So ask any other monkey, "Can you jump?" Melancholy. [laughter] Similarly, big, big scholars of Bhagavad-gītā and do not know what is the law of God. This is going on. Big, big commentary, big, big book, but the law he does not know.
So let us not be like that big-bellied monkey who could not jump to Lanka. If we fully surrender to Krishna we can jump all the way to Krishnloka.

Why are we experiencing to many difficulties in this world?Answer
My Dear Devotee,
Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.
We are experiencing so many difficulties because we are trying to be what we are not. We are just like the fish out of the water who is foolishly and futilely trying to enjoy on the land. We are spiritual beings meant for serving the Supreme Krishna in His transcendental abode who are ridiculously trying to enjoy separately from Him in this place where no true happiness actually, factually exists.
I hope this meets you in the best of health.
Your ever well-wisher,
