Can One Be Perplexed and Not Be Discouraged?

7 February 2025

The beauty of Krishna consciousness is that even though sometimes one may be perplexed regarding how to execute his Krishna conscious duties, he is never discouraged because he always knows that by Krishna's mercy everything will ultimately work out okay. In this regard Srila Prabhupada has written as follows in his purport to Srimad Bhagavatam, Third Canto, Chapter 13, Text 18:

"The devotees of the Lord, who are all confidential servitors, are sometimes perplexed in the discharge of their respective duties, but they are never discouraged. They have full faith in the Lord, and He paves the way for the smooth progress of the devotee's duty."

So the conclusion is that if one sincerely practices Krishna consciousness all of his problems will be ultimately solved.

Transcendental Correspondence

Dear Srila Gurudev,
Please accept my humble obeisances at your lotus feet.
All glories to you.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.
All glories to Gurumata.

Srila Gurudev, thank you very much for enlightening about conscience in today's Thought for the Day. For my better understanding, I have a few questions on this topic. If you can please clarify for my deeper understanding, I will be eternally grateful.

Is it not that a conditioned soul is fully convinced of their actions and believes them to be true? Because of the conditioning, the embodied being will feel what he/she is doing is correct. For example, a person who works hard for the week is convinced that drinking and having sex is the way to enjoy. His conscience will not tell him that it is wrong. Rather he will think it is his right to enjoy as he sees fit. Another example is a person donating meat to a homeless guy. He is convinced that he has followed his conscience and helped a needy man. He is rather feeling very good about it. But knowing the scriptures we know that both are getting heavy karmic reactions for it. In these examples, how can we understand Krsna in the form of conscience? They have followed their conscience, felt nothing wrong but still they are not properly situated.
How to differentiate between the conscience and mind?
Srila Gurudev, thank you for clearing my doubts.

Forever grateful,
Your servant,
Bhaktipriya devi dasi

My Dear Bhaktipriya,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

The obvious conclusion is that the devotee's sense of right and wrong (conscience) is the directions of the Supersoul
and the nondevotee's sense of right and wrong is not the Supersoul. It is mental concoction.

If one’s sense of right and wrong is confirmed in the scriptures and by the spiritual master it is correct. Otherwise it is fallacious.

I hope this meets you in the best of health.
Your ever well-wisher,

Sankarshan Das Adhikari
