An Idle Mind is the Devil's Workshop

13 February 2025

There is a popular saying, "An idle mind is the devil's workshop." There is a lot of truth in this saying. This is why Lord Krishna instructs in Bhagavad-gita, Chapter 6, Text 26:

yato yato niścalati
manaś cañcalam asthiram
tatas tato niyamyaitad
ātmany eva vaśaṁ nayet

"From wherever the mind wanders due to its flickering and unsteady nature, one must certainly withdraw it and bring it back under the control of the Self."

If we let the mind run wild it will gravitate towards material sense gratification and we will fall down into the cycle of birth and death. The senses are compared to horses. The mind is compared to the reins. The intelligence is compared to the driver. And the soul is compared to the passenger. The uncontrolled mind is compared to driver letting go of the reins and thus allowing the horses to run wild. The wild horses will then take the chariot off a cliff. This means that the passenger will fall back into the cycle of birth and death. So we must always see with our intelligence (the driver) that our mind is fixed in Krishna consciousness 24/7.

Transcendental Correspondence

Pranam Gurudev,
I want to be like a bee tasting honey instead of like a fly going after the sores. But I don't know how to. I don't understand what is spiritual happiness. All I get here is sorrow. I don't know how spirituality tastes.
Priyan

Answer

From: Sri Vrindavan Dhama, India

My Dear Priyan,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

"Honey bee" means that you must learn the art of how to experience Krishna within everything and everything within Krishna. You will learn to experience this by chanting at least 16 rounds of japa mala every day of the Hare Krishna mahamantra along with the strict avoidance of illicit sex, meat eating, intoxication, and gambling.

I hope this meets you in the best of health.
Your ever well-wisher,

Sankarshan Das Adhikari
