Tolerate the Dualities

In this material world we are constantly being harassed by the dualities of heat and cold, happiness and distress, and honor and dishonor. Thus things can sometimes be extremely difficult. Sometimes it's so bad that we feel like we are basketballs being bounced around on basketball court. Therefore to have any kind of peace of mind we must train ourselves to be tolerant of these dualities. This is why Lord Sri Krishna so mercifully gives us the following instruction:

mātrā-sparśās tu kaunteya
śītoṣṇa-sukha-duḥkha-dāḥ
āgamāpāyino 'nityās
tāṁs titikṣasva bhārata

"O son of Kuntī, the nonpermanent appearance of happiness and distress, and their disappearance in due course, are like the appearance and disappearance of winter and summer seasons. They arise from sense perception, O scion of Bharata, and one must learn to tolerate them without being disturbed."

Today while writing this Krishna blessed me with a a great chance to practice this. The internet where I am staying is disfunctional. I tried to activate international data roaming on my mobile phone but could not do so. I called my phone company to get guidance on how to this. After a very long wait on an international long distance call I was disconnected. The end result is that today's Thought for the Day is being posted an hour late. This gives you, my readers, the opportunity to also practice tolerance. This is Krishna's mercy upon you.

Heart Melting Reunion with Amarendra and Gayatri

On Friday 26 June 2015 I was blessed with the greatest good fortune of meeting with two of the dearest devotees of my entire life, His Grace Amarendra Prabhu and his good wife, Srimati Gayatri devi dasi. I am eternally indebted to these great souls for how much they helped me in my spiritual life when I was a young devotee. When I was young brahmacari monk in 1973 I joined with the two of them in Gainesville, Florida. We were a three person preaching center, and they were just like a mother and father to me. I had so many wonderful Krishna conscious experiences in their association that I can hardly begin to describe them here. But at least may it suffice for me to say for now that Gayatri taught me what it means to be a soft-hearted devotee of the Lord and she gave me my first cooking lesson, teaching me how to make cauliflower pakoras, and Amarendra taught me the art of how to preach strongly, intelligently, and coolly to defeat opposing arguments. Who is this Krishna?

Krishna is not a myth, nor is He an ordinary historical personality. He is the Supreme All-Attractive Personality of Godhead. He is the oldest of all while simultaneously maintaining the form of a 16 year old youth.
