Joining a Spiritual Family

One of the most wonderful and enlivening items of surrendering to Krishna is to join a spiritual family. The reason for this is that we develop our consciousness according to the company that we keep. If we associate with non-devotees we remain non-devotees. But if we associate with devotees we become devotees and become liberated from the cycle of repeated birth and death.

In this regard Lord Sri Krishna states in the Bhagavad-gita 2.62: saṅgāt sañjāyate--"One develops his consciousness according to his association." Therefore we should always associate with devotees as much as possible by engaging ourselves along with them in the different aspects of bhakti such as hearing about the Lord, chanting His glories, and remembering Him. If in the course of our occupational duties or for preaching work we find ourselves in the association of non-devotees, we should always endeavor to save them by turning them into devotees. By this endeavor instead of our becoming polluted by their association, they will become elevated and purified due to our association.

Question: How to Get Rid of Bad Thoughts?

How can we stop our negative thoughts for guru, Gauranga and His devotees. We know such thinking will never give us Krishna consciousness. But what to do if we’re trying to eliminate those bad thoughts but they keep surpassing our abillity to suppress them? Please help!!

Dipesh

Answer: Think of Krishna

From: Shah Alam, Malaysia

My Dear Dipesh,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

The way to get over negative thoughts is to get replacing them with positive
thoughts. Srila Prabhupada very nicely explains this in the following conversation with a man named Dr. Frazier:

Dr. Frazer: What do you do when someone preoccupied with bad thoughts comes to you?
Srila Prabhupada: When someone is absorbed in thoughts of Krishna, there is no scope for bad thoughts. You can think of only one subject matter at a time, so if you are absorbed twenty-four hours a day in thoughts of Krishna, then there is no question of bad thoughts.
Dr. Frazer: If I understand you correctly, Krishna conscious people are cured of bad thoughts just by getting away from them -- not by expressing the thoughts and getting away from them, but by not expressing the thoughts and getting away from them.
Srila Prabhupada: The process is like this: a man comes to our society with bad thoughts, but by chanting, chanting, chanting, he becomes relieved of these bad thoughts.
Dr. Frazer: He doesn't talk about the bad thoughts to anyone?
Srila Prabhupada: He may talk or not talk; it doesn't matter. But the bad thoughts go away.

I hope this meets you in the best of health
and in an ecstatic mood.

Your ever well-wisher,
Sankarshan Das Adhikari
