Be Kind to Yourself

Do not torture yourself by stubbornly continuing to misidentify yourself with your material body. That body is not you. It is just a vehicle that you are using for a certain amount of time according to the law of karma until you get another body. In the cycle of birth of death you have rotated endlessly again and again through 8,400,000 different species. Now you are blessed with a human form. This is the greatest opportunity, a golden opportunity, because now you have the option of conducting your life in such a way that you can become liberated from the endless cycle of birth and death and return to your original all-blissful, all-cognizant position that you once relished like anything in the spiritual world before you fell down into this often hellish material existence.

Realize now that you are an eternal spiritual being qualitatively one with that Supreme Person, whom many people call "God", who is the absolute source of all existence and the loving well-wisher of everyone in all of existence. Be kind to yourself by reinstating yourself in His eternal service in His transcendental pastimes in that most all-wondrous spiritual sky.

Question: Japa and Scripture at the Same Time?

Dear Srila Gurudeva,
Please accept my humble obeisances.

All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Is it good if I chant rounds of Hare Krishna Mahamantra loudly and read the Bhagavad-gita or the Srimad Bhagavatam at the same time? This helps to keep my mind from wandering to material thoughts.

Answer: Do Not Mix. Do One or the Other Perfectly.

From: Solferino, Mauritius

My Dear Pankaj,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Do not mix them. Do one or the other with full undivided attention.

If your mind wanders away during japa, pause for a moment and intensely beg Krishna to help you keep you mind focused on His holy names. Then go back to your japa with renewed determination and concentration. Every time your mind goes off repeat this technique. In this way gradually you will master the art of keeping your mind solidly fixed on Krishna’s unlimitedly sweet holy names.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Your ever well-wisher,
Sankarshan Das Adhikari
