Rascal in the Hotel Lobby is Not Given a Room

Just imagine that you are a hotel clerk and into the hotel lobby staggers a drunk, unkempt, filthy rascal who is spouting off profanity at the top of his lungs and who then makes his way to your counter and asks to be given a room. Your manager then whispers in your ear that your hotel does not give rooms to such people. So you do your duty and you do not allow him a room.

We neophyte devotees often face a similar situation in the hotel lobby of our minds. Due to memories of previous sinful activities before we embraced the path of bhakti, sinful desires sometimes manifest in our mental lobby. As long as we do not give them a room we are okay. But if we allow them to occcupy a room, this can lead to our falling down from the most glorious path of Krishna consciousness. Therefore we must always be vigilant to usher all sinful thoughts to the hotel door immediately ordering them to leave.

The conclusion is that dirty thoughts in your mental lobby which you do not welcome are not a fall down. But if you facilitate them with a room, i.e. a permanent place of residence, you are will fall down from the glorious path of Krishna consciousness. Therefore always be a good clerk and never allow sinful thoughts a place of residence in your heart.

Question: Why Do We Have Restrictions?

Srila Gurudeva!
Please accept my humble obesiences!
The example is given of a patient who doesn't lose the taste for palatable dishes, even when he is posed with restrictions. When we are posed with restrictions, and still having attraction for sense gratification, what is the role of these restrictions?

Your servant,
Bhargavi

Answer: To Help Us Develop a Higher Taste

By abstaining from sinful activities and chanting Hare Krishna we will get a higher taste and automatically lose our taste for those sinful activities.
