Become a Sage of Steady Mind

In this material world we are being constantly bombarded by the dualities of pain and pleasure, honor and dishonor, heat and cold, happiness and distress, etc. The simple trick how to remain steady in one's mind while being hit with all these dualities is to see them all as Krishna's special mercy upon us to help us get back to His transcendental abode as soon as possible.

Question: Liberation Just By Seeing Lord Jagannatha?

My dear respected Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada .
All glories to you and Guru Mataji .

Recently in one of our localities here happened Ratha Yatra of Lord Jagannatha and I attended that. There in that banner I found one statement which states as follows.

"One who sees Jagannatha once is relieved from all sins and enters Vaikuntha."

The above statement is from the Brahmanda Purana. Like that it was mentioned. I may not remember the exact words of the above statement. So is it stated in Brahmanda Purana as above? If so, then why we need to do regular chanting everyday and our regular sadhana everyday?

Answer: Possible, But Not Necessarily In All Cases

I do not know about this particular statement, but there are many such statements in the revealed scriptures. In regards to such statements, Srila Prabhupada describes as follows in Chapter 13 of the Nectar of Devotion:

"In these statements about devotional service, sometimes it may appear that the results have been overestimated, but actually there is no overestimation. Some devotees, as revealed scriptures give evidence, have had immediate results by such association, although this is not possible for all. For example, the Kumaras immediately became devotees simply by smelling the incense in the temple. Bilvamangala Thakura simply heard about Krishna and then immediately gave up his beautiful girl friend and started out for Mathura and Vrndavana, where he became a perfect Vaisnava. So these statements are not overestimations, nor are they stories. They are actual facts, but are true for certain devotees and do not necessarily apply to all. These descriptions, even if considered overestimations, must be taken as they are, in order to divert our attention from the fleeting material beauty to the eternal beauty of Krishna consciousness. And for a person who is already in contact with Krishna consciousness, the described results are not unusual."

Therefore, we must continue with our routine work of following the principles of bhakti. In this way we will become fully qualified for such amazing benedictions to powerfully transform us. Sometimes such powerful benedictions can even transform someone who is not engaged in the routine work of bhakti. After such an astounding transformation they will naturally fully take up a life of bhakti. However, if after having gotten such an amazing benediction they again engage in sinful activities, it is compared to the elephant who takes bath and then rolls in the dirt to dry himself off. This means that they deprive themselves of the result of that amazing benediction by resuming their usual sinful activities.
