Question: Is Serving Man Serving God?

Dear Maharaja,

Please accept my humble obeisances!

Hare Krishna!

I would like to ask you: For one who is helping the poor and needy will his good deeds be equivalent to one progressing in spiritual life? I am asking this because there are some people who say that helping others is as good as praying.

Thank you.

Answer: Serving Man Without God is Disservice

Helping the poor and needy is not the same as spiritual progress. If one simply helps the poor and needy on the material plane neglecting their ultimate spiritual welfare, the result will be that he will take birth again in this material world so the poor and needy he helped can help him in return in his next life. Spiritual progress means to realize that everyone in this material world is poor and needy because they are lacking Krishna consciousness. Even the wealthy class is poor and needy because of their lack of Krishna consciousness. In other words, without Krishna consciousness everyone is being dragged down to the animal kingdom in their next life. Therefore the real welfare worker to benefit all the poor and needy people of this world is that person who fully dedicates his life for awakening the dormant Krishna consciousness within the hearts of all beings.

They say service to man is service to God. But actually they have it backwards. When you serve God you are actually able to give tangible service to man. Serving man while neglecting God is a disservice to man. It is something like watering the leaves and branches of the tree while neglecting the root. Such watering of the tree will not benefit the tree. However, when you water the root of the tree all the leaves and branches are automatically nourished. In a similar way, when you give loving service to God you automatically give the best service to the suffering humanity
