Is Divorce Vedic?

We have recently heard a report that a so-called Vedic astrologer advised someone that they could get a divorce. This reminds us that we are now deeply entrenched in the Kali yuga, the age of quarrel and hypocrisy because this is indeed the height of hypocrisy. Divorce does not exist at all in Vedic culture. In Vedic culture there is no such thing as divorce.

In this connection Srila Prabhupada writes in his purport to Srimad Bhagavatam, Fourth Canto, Chapter 23, Text 25 as follows:

"In Vedic civilization the husband and wife were not separated by such man-made laws as divorce. We should understand the necessity for maintaining family life in human society and should thus abolish this artificial law known as divorce. The husband and wife should live in Krishna consciousness and follow in the footsteps of Laksmi-Narayana or Krishna-Rukmini. In this way peace and harmony can be possible within this world."

Therefore someone who is posing himself as a Vedic astrologer and advocating divorce is simply a cheater and a rascal, and there is not much more to be said in this connection. So even though we are the friends of all, we must expose these rascals so that in the name of Krishna consciousness or Vedic culture people will not be misled.

Dear Lord Sri Krishna, please save us from this insanity.

Question: Verse Describing the Glories of Krishna's Name?

Dear Srila Gurudeva,
Please accept my humble obeisances at your lotus feet.
All Glories to Srila Prabhupada,

In one of your lectures you spoke a verse which describes the glories of Krishna's name, I could not catch it properly but I remember a few of the lines from the translation, which goes like this, “every time I hear the name of Krishna I desire to have many mouths and many ears.”

Could you please share with me that verse and translation? I want to memorize that verse because it seems to be very profound.

Your servant,
Sadhu Bhushan Das

My Dear Sadhu Bhusana,

Here is that most wonderful super nectarean verse that you are looking for:

tuṇḍe tāṇḍavinī ratiṁ vitanute tuṇḍāvalī-labdhaye

tuṇḍe—in the mouth; tāṇḍavinī—dancing; ratim—the inspiration; vitanute—expands; tuṇḍa-āvalī-labdhaye—to achieve many mouths; karṇa—of the ear; kroḍa—in the hole; kaḍambinī—sprouting; ghaṭayate—causes to appear; karṇa-arbudebhyaḥ spṛhām—the desire for millions of ears; cetaḥ-prāṅgaṇa—in the courtyard of the heart; saṅginī—being a companion; vijayate—conquers; sarva-indriyāṇām—of all the senses; kṛtim—the activity; na u—not; jāne—I know; janitā—produced; kiyadbhiḥ—of what measure; amṛtaiḥ—by nectar; kṛṣṇa—the name of Krishna; iti—thus; varṇa-dvayī—the two syllables.

TRANSLATION
”I do not know how much nectar the two syllables ’Krish-na’ have produced. When the holy name of Krishna is chanted, it appears to dance within the mouth. We then desire many, many mouths. When that name enters the holes of the ears, we desire many millions of ears. And when the holy name dances in the courtyard of the heart, it conquers the activities of the mind, and therefore all the senses become inert.”

In his purport to this verse Srila Prabhupada describes as follows:

"This verse is included in the Vidagdha-madhava (1.15), a seven-act play written by Srila Rupa Gosvami describing the pastimes of Sri Krishna in Vrindavan."

So now taking this verse as your guide you should dive unlimitedly deep into the sweet, sweet mellow of Lord Sri Krishna's transcendental name.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Your ever well-wisher,
Sankarshan Das Adhikari
