Tolerate the Dualities

15 June 2025

In this material world things do not always go well. We always being bombard by the dualities. This is why we have to learn how to be tolerant. Sometimes we are praised. Sometimes we are chastised. Sometimes there is heat. Sometimes there is cold. Sometimes there is youth. Sometimes there is old age. Sometimes there is birth. Sometimes there is death. Sometimes there is pain. Sometimes there is pleasure. Sometimes we are honored. Sometimes we are dishonored. Sometimes there is peace. Sometimes there is war. Sometimes there is sickness. Sometimes there is health. Sometimes there is poverty. Sometimes there is wealth. The list goes on and on.

In this connection Lord Sri Krishna advises us as follows in Bhagavad-gita, Chapter 2, Text 14:

mātrā-sparśās tu kaunteya
śītoṣṇa-sukha-duḥkha-dāḥ
āgamāpāyino 'nityās
tāṁs titikṣasva bhārata

"O son of Kuntī, the nonpermanent appearance of happiness and distress, and their disappearance in due course, are like the appearance and disappearance of winter and summer seasons. They arise from sense perception, O scion of Bharata, and one must learn to tolerate them without being disturbed."

Srila Prabhupada has elaborated on this verse as follows in his purport;

"In the proper discharge of duty, one has to learn to tolerate nonpermanent appearances and disappearances of happiness and distress. According to Vedic injunction, one has to take his bath early in the morning even during the month of Māgha (January-February). It is very cold at that time, but in spite of that a man who abides by the religious principles does not hesitate to take his bath. Similarly, a woman does not hesitate to cook in the kitchen in the months of May and June, the hottest part of the summer season. One has to execute his duty in spite of climatic inconveniences. Similarly, to fight is the religious principle of the kṣatriyas, and although one has to fight with some friend or relative, one should not deviate from his prescribed duty. One has to follow the prescribed rules and regulations of religious principles in order to rise up to the platform of knowledge, because by knowledge and devotion only can one liberate himself from the clutches of māyā (illusion).
"The two different names of address given to Arjuna are also significant. To address him as Kaunteya signifies his great blood relations from his mother's side; and to address him as Bhārata signifies his greatness from his father's side. From both sides he is supposed to have a great heritage. A great heritage brings responsibility in the matter of proper discharge of duties; therefore, he cannot avoid fighting."

This is a good lesson for us all to learn, to not be disturbed by the dualities that we always experience here in this rotten material world. The simple way to do is to always remember Krishna, our dearmost, ever well-wishing friend.

Hare Krishna Srila Gurudev
Please accept my humble obeisances

It seems it will take many lifetimes to come to platform of being a pure devotee because of unsteady mind, anarthas, inattention in chanting and other offences, lack of vaisnava etiquette, lack of knowledge and experience of reality, lack of seriousness, lack of qualities, laziness, weak body, lack of sastra caksu etc.

What I should do to make sure of becoming a pure devotee in this lifetime?

My Dear Tarun Krishna,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Śrīla Prabhupāda.

Become a pure devotee right now. Why wait for a lifetime or many lifetimes? It is clearly explained by Krishna Das Kaviraja in the Sri Caitanya Caritamrita, Madhya Lila, Chapter 22, Text 54:

’sādhu-saṅga’, ’sādhu-saṅga’—sarva-śāstre kaya
lava-mātra sādhu-saṅge sarva-siddhi haya

”The verdict of all revealed scriptures is that by even a moment’s association with a pure devotee, one can attain all success.”

In his purport Srila Prabhupada explains, "According to astronomical calculations, a lava is one eleventh of a second.”

Simply by reading Srila Prabhupada’s books you are getting the association of a pure devotee. Thus by even reading one word from Srila Prabhupada’s books you can practically instantly become a pure devotee.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in a cheerful mood.

Your ever well-wisher,
Sankarshan Das Adhikari
