I Embrace the Mood of Prahlada Maharaja

24 June 2025

I like very much appreciate and resonate with the mood of Prahlada Maharaja. He said, "I do not wish to go alone to Vaikuṇṭha unless I take all these rascals with me." This is also my desire. I want to stay here in this material world until all of the fallen souls who are trapped here in the cycle of birth are delivered back to their original identities in the spiritual world. My going back to home, back to Godhead can wait. First let them all be delivered, then I can also go back to Godhead. I know this mood will very much please my beloved Guru Maharaja, His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada, because he ordered us to deliver the world.. Thus I feel great happiness in embracing this mood.

Some Vaisnavas claim that the Mahamantra begins with Hare Rama instead of Hare Krishna. How to understand this?

Answer

In the Kali-santaraṇa Upaniṣad it is stated:

hare kṛṣṇa hare kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa hare hare
hare rāma hare rāma rāma rāma hare hare
iti ṣoḍaśakaṁ nāmnāṁ kali-kalmaṣa-nāśanam
nātaḥ parataropāyaḥ sarva-vedeṣu dṛśyate

”The sixteen words Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare / Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare are especially meant for counteracting the contaminations of Kali. To save oneself from the contamination of Kali, there is no alternative to the chanting of these sixteen words.”

Lord Caitanya, who is Krishna Himself, chanted the mahā-mantra beginning with “Hare Krishna.” This is the most authoritative evidence regarding which to chant first. However, once you begin chanting, the lines naturally alternate between “Hare Krishna” and “Hare Rama,” making it the same no matter which one you started with. Thus we do not waste our time with such so-called controversies.
