It is the Duty of the Spiritual Master to Criticize the Disciple

October 19, 2025

Everyone likes to be praised and appreciated by the spiritual master. However, at times it is the spiritual master’s duty to point out the faults of his disciples. Sadly, when this happens, some neophyte devotees make the mistake of finding fault with their spiritual master instead of rectifying themselves. Rather than correcting their shortcomings, they choose to reject their spiritual master. This is the greatest of all offenses, It is known as guru-aparādha, offending the spiritual master Such so-called disciples will suffer greatly for committing this gravest if all offenses.

In this connection Srila Prabhupada has written as follows in a letter to Giriraja das in a letter dated Los Angeles 24 May, 1972 from Los Angeles:

Actually it is the duty of the spiritual master to find fault with his students so that they may make progress, not that he should always be praising them. So if you find some criticism, kindly accept it in that spirit. I am only interested in that you along with all my other students should become Krishna Conscious.

So when our spiritual master corrects let us always take this as the greatest blessing and correct ourselves rather than rejecting the spiritual master.

My Dear Aditi,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Śrīla Prabhupāda.

By becoming well-read in Śrīla Prabhupāda’s books, we can easily recognize when we are drifting off the proper path. The simplest way to conquer anger is to understand that everything happening to me is coming as a special gift from Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa to help me become fully surrendered to Him.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in a cheerful mood.

Your ever well-wisher,
Sankarshan Das Adhikari

How I Came to Krishna Consciousness

In a world obsessed with money, fame, and fleeting pleasures—leading nowhere but to the grave or the crematorium—I walked away. Life felt so meaningless, I couldn’t stand it. This is the true story of how I turned my back on the American materialistic dream and discovered something far greater: Krishna consciousness. A gripping journey of inner revolution and a call to awaken a world civilization on the edge of collapse.
