Is Psychiatric Care Needed to Cure Anxiety?
October 15, 2025
I have heard that some devotees are recommending that psychiatric care is sometimes needed to cure anxiety, in order to help a troubled devotee in their chanting. This sounds very strange to me because Srila Prabhupada has written as follows:Psychiatrists are humbug, all humbug. They cannot help. Best thing is to be engaged in continuously chanting and hearing Sankirtana, that will cure anyone of mental disease.
From a Letter to: Upendra -- Calcutta 19 February, 1972
Thus by Srila Prabhupada's mercy we can understand that if our minds are disturbed we simply have to take complete shelter of Guru and Krishna. This is the perfect solution to free us from all anxiety. We do not need psychiatric care.

In Verse 3 of Chapter 3, Karma-yoga, it is stated that:
“Religion without philosophy is sentiment or sometimes fanaticism, while philosophy without religion is mental speculation.”
Kindly elaborate on this statement so that I may better understand it.

Answer
My Dear Adarsh,
Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Śrīla Prabhupāda.
This means that if we blindly follow a religious path without knowing why, we are fanatics. And if we simply philosophize without surrendering to God we are simply mental speculators and receive no spiritual benefit.
I hope this meets you in the best of health and in a cheerful mood.
Your ever well-wisher,
Sankarshan Das Adhikari

How I Came to Krishna Consciousness
In a world obsessed with money, fame, and fleeting pleasures—leading nowhere but to the grave or the crematorium—I walked away. Life felt so meaningless, I couldn’t stand it. This is the true story of how I turned my back on the American materialistic dream and discovered something far greater: Krishna consciousness. A gripping journey of inner revolution and a call to awaken a world civilization on the edge of collapse.Read My Memoir You'll Love It!
