How Will You Experience Death?

October 24, 2025

Srila Prabhupada stated when he was giving a lecture on Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 6.1.27–34 on December 16, 1970 in Surat, India:

People may say, "The devotee is also dying, and the nondevotee, sinful man, is also dying. What is the difference?" So there is much difference. The example is given: just like a cat catching a rat in his mouth, and at the same time carrying his cubs in the mouth.

You see... Superficially, we can see that the same mouth is being used, but one is feeling comfortable being carried by the mother, and another is feeling the death knell. Similarly, at the time of death, the devotee's feeling that they are being transferred to Vaikuṇṭha, whereas the ordinary sinful man is feeling that the Yamarāja, the dūtas, the constables of Yamarāja, are dragging him to the hellish condition of life.

And this connection Srila Prabhupada also stated in a a lecture on Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.16.8 -- on January 5, 1974, in Los Angeles

...deathlessness begins from the day of initiation. Ādau gurvāśrayam. As soon as you take shelter of a bona fide spiritual master, your point of deathlessness begins immediately. Immediately. And if you continue the advice and instruction of the spiritual master, or the śāstra, then you become deathless. No more death. And Yamarāja wants to see that actually you are continuing your deathlessness process. This is... Kṛṣṇa consciousness is so nice. Therefore it is advised.

Now if somebody argue that "Here is... A devotee is also dying.A devotee is also dying. How can I say that it is deathlessness?" No, he does not know. Devotee is not dying. There is very good example. Just like a cat: he catches the rat and he catches his cub also. But these two kinds of catching is different. When the cat catches a rat, that rat means his "chi-chi-chi" means dying, actually dying. And the cub, he is feeling very comfortable: "meow, meow, meow." Because the same cat, catching process is the same, but the feeling is different. So a devotee seemingly dying, he is not dying. He is going back to Kṛṣṇa. He is very pleased, "Now my labor is finished. I am going to Kṛṣṇa." That is his feeling.

And others, they are crying, "Oh, this is my estate. This is my family. This is my, this is my, this is my... I am leaving. I do not want to leave it. What will happen to that?" He is crying. That is death.

For the devotee, death is a piece of cake, but for the non-devotee, death is the most hellish nightmare. So, how will you experience death? Hopefully you will be like the kitten.

Srila Prabhupada writes in his Bhagavad-gita purport, "The householders should earn a livelihood by an honorable means and spend fifty percent of their income to propagate Kṛṣṇa consciousness all over the world."

If I cannot afford to give fifty percent of my income does this means that I am disobeying the order of the spiritual master and that I thus will not be qualified to go back to home, back to Godhead?

Understanding the impracticality of this standard in today's very difficult economic situation Srila Prabhupada gave this concession to one his disciples:

"So, either 50% or any per cent you can easily spare for the Society, we shall welcome. Don't be overburdened."

How I Came to Krishna Consciousness

In a world obsessed with money, fame, and fleeting pleasures—leading nowhere but to the grave or the crematorium—I walked away. Life felt so meaningless, I couldn’t stand it. This is the true story of how I turned my back on the American materialistic dream and discovered something far greater: Krishna consciousness. A gripping journey of inner revolution and a call to awaken a world civilization on the edge of collapse.
