Muslims Destroy ISKCON Temple

Recently in Meherpur, within Bangladesh's Khulna division, an ISKCON temple was attacked, vandalized, and set ablaze amid ongoing unrest following the resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The incident is part of a broader wave of violence targeting Hindu temples across the country. ISKCON spokesperson Yudhistir Govinda Das confirmed that the temple, along with the deities of Lord Jagannath, Baladev, and Subhadra Devi, was destroyed. Fortunately, the three devotees residing in the center managed to escape unharmed.

Our scriptures say that we should be more tolerant than a tree. So what be our mood when one of our ISKCON temples along with its deities are destroyed. Should our mood be to be very tolerant and forgiving? Or should we think of punishing the blasphemers? In this connection Srila Prabhupada has written as follows in his purport to CC Ādi 10.85

”One can chant the holy name of the Lord in a humble state of mind, thinking himself lower than the straw in the street. One should be more tolerant than a tree, devoid of all sense of false prestige, and should be ready to offer all respect to others. In such a state of mind one can chant the holy name of the Lord constantly.” Nevertheless, when the Lord was informed that Nityānanda Prabhu was injured by Jagāi and Mādhāi, He immediately went to the spot, angry like fire, wanting to kill them. Thus Lord Caitanya has explained His verse by the example of His own behavior. One should tolerate insults against oneself, but when there is blasphemy committed against superiors such as other Vaiṣṇavas, one should be neither humble nor meek: one must take proper steps to counteract such blasphemy. This is the duty of a servant of a guru and Vaiṣṇavas.

In this case there is nothing we can do against the blasphemers in Bangladesh. And the government will not likely do anything either. But at least we should know what our mood should be and act according to time, place, and circumstance like the time we successfully used a gun to stop a robbery attempt at our temple in Miami, Florida USA.
