Tune In, Turn On, and Bliss Out

In material society intoxication is indeed very, very popular. It's so popular that it is a multi billion dollar industry. But no matter how much a person gets intoxicated the effect of the intoxicant will eventually wear off and he or she will have to deal with the miseries and anxieties of normal every day waking reality again.

However, if one is Krishna conscious, he stays high forever with no coming down. In this state of divine intoxication we are not dull headed. Rather we are blessed with sharp ever increasing intelligence, compassion, joyfulness and alertness. This is why a divinely intoxicated person, a Krishna conscious person, can easily give up all forms of mundane intoxication as easily as a pauper who becomes a millionaire can throw away his old torn clothing.

Question: Chant Hare Krishna or Hare Rama First?

Hare Krishna, Gurudeva,
Namaste,

In some scriptures the mahamantra has Hare Rama first and then Hare Krishna. However I think after Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu Avatar changed it to Hare Krishna first followed by Hare Rama. Is this true? Please put some light on it as I have also gone through lot of times earlier. Thanks.

With respect,
Saurabh Shyamsunder

Answer: Either Way is the Same

My Dear Saurabh,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

There are many Vedic literatures that recommend chanting this Mahamantra. Lord Caitanya did not change the order of the Mahamantra. Some scriptures give it with Hare Kṛṣṇa first and others give it with Hare Rāma first. Sometimes it starts, "Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare"; and it sometimes it starts "Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare." So people become puzzled, which name should be chanted first.

Either way you can chant it it comes out the same. Either you start with Hare Kṛṣṇa or with Hare Rāma. It doesn't matter because once you get chanting its the same thing, going back and forth between Hare Kṛṣṇa and Hare Rāma.

There is no difference between the holy name of Kṛṣṇa and Rāma. But still, there is some distinction. In the śāstra it is said that if you chant one thousand times Lord Viṣṇu's name, that is equal to chanting one
name of Lord Rāma." And if you chant three times Lord Rāma's name, it is equal to one time chanting Kṛṣṇa's name. This is the shastric injunction.

I hope this meets you in the best of health.
