Become a Moon and Enlighten the World

Srila Prabhupada explains in a Srimad Bhagavatam lecture that he gave in New York on 29 November 1973 as follows:

"So try to preach this cult. But not that everyone will accept, but even a few percent, one percent of the whole population accept. Just like in the sky, there is one moon only and there are millions of stars. They're useless. What is the value of the millions of stars? But one moon, oh, dissipate the whole darkness of night. Similarly, at least those who have taken to Krishna consciousness, you become, each of you become a moon and enlighten the world. These so-called glow-worms, they'll not be able to do anything. That's a fact. Don't remain a glow-worm. Just become a sun and moon. Then you will..., people will be happy, you will be happy."

The example of the moon is given here by Srila Prabhupada because even though millions of stars cannot do much to brighten the night, one moon can light up the whole night sky. Those who are serious about Krishna consciousness will take it as their personal responsibility to become moonlike devotees who can enlighten the entire world with Krishna consciousness. And they will beg Krishna to bless them with the divine empowerment to do so.

Question: Attentive Chanting Reduces All Offenses?

Dear Srila Gurudeva
Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I heard one lecture by you about the 10 offenses while chanting, and you said that the 11th offense( inattentive chanting ) encapsulates the other ten.
So if one really tries hard for being attentive, would this make the other ten offenses fall away or far easier to avoid?

Since you accepted me, I have seen that a lot more taste comes for chanting, and it’s even easy to chant in my mind while at work. It’s like I’m tuned into radio Krishna automatically!

Obviously I need to ensure I keep this up. Hence the question.

Sincerely,
Uddhava Das

Answer: Absolutely!

My Dear Uddhava Das,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Absolutely! Yes, this is a fact. The more you intensify your focus/concentration on the holy names, the more by Their grace all offenses will fall away. But this does not mean you should ignore the other offenses. By carefully avoiding the other offenses your focus/concentration on the holy names will naturally increase. Factually, the more you can carefully avoid any one of the offenses, the more you will naturally avoid the other offenses. In this way, by carefully avoiding all of the offenses, while simultaneously intensifying your focus on the holy names you will snowball your spiritual advancement, and you will quickly enter into the mood of pure devotional service.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Your ever well-wisher,
Sankarshan Das Adhikari
