Don't Be A Fool Number One

This human life is a rare opportunity indeed to escape the suffering that we have been undergoing for countless millions of lifetimes. Therefore the Vedic wisdom implores us to not be so foolish as to throw another life away in the vain pursuit of material sense gratification, which is available also to the lower animals. Since we do not know our way out of the darkness of ignorance we must take the help of a bona fide spiritual master to show us the correct path that will safely take us to supreme destination, that supreme abode in which Radha and Krishna are engaged in their eternal loving pastimes.

Question: How Can the Vedic Wisdom Be Superfluous?

Srila Gurudeva, can you kindly explain what is meant by Srila Prabhupada's following statement from the Srimad Bhagavatam introduction?

"The Lord said that but for these three items--namely, eternal relation with God, exchange of dealings with Him and the attainment of love for Him--all that is instructed in the Vedas is superfluous and concocted."

Thank you,

Your eternal servant,

Balarama Das

Answer: If It Is Explained Incorrectly

Srila Prabhupada is quoting Lord Caitanya's statement to Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya. You can also read this statement in the Sri Caitanya Caritamrita, Madhya Lila, Chapter 6, Verses 178-179. Lord Caitanya is saying that these three subject matters are the essence of the Vedic wisdom. They are further described in the Caitanya Caritamrita as follows:

Establishing one's original eternal relationship with the Supreme Personality of Godhead is called sambandha. Acting in accordance with this constitutional relationship is called abhidheya. And attaining pure love for the Supreme Personality of Godhead is called prayojana, the ultimate goal of life.

Lord Caitanya is that saying that if one tries to explain the Vedic literature in a way which differs from these three items, he is indulging in imagination and that any interpretation of the self-evident Vedic version is simply imaginary.
