Is There a Broader Definition of "No Illicit Sex?"

One of my Godbrothers has put forward what he calls the "broader definition" of "no illict sex." His argument is that since Srila Prabhupada often says that sex is only allowed in marriage therefore within marriage sex can be had with no restrictions as long as one does not kill any babies produced by abortion. But if that is true why does Srila Prabhupada write this in his purport to Srimad Bhagavatam, Fourth Canto, Chapter 27, Text 5?

"If one enjoys his senses unrestrictedly, he leads a sinful life. The animals do not violate the laws of nature. For example, the sex impulse in animals is very strong during certain months of the year. The lion is very powerful. He is a flesh-eater and is very strong, but he enjoys sex only once in a year. Similarly, according to religious injunctions a man is restricted to enjoy sex only once in a month, after the menstrual period of the wife, and if the wife is pregnant, he is not allowed sex life at all. That is the law for human beings. A man is allowed to keep more than one wife because he cannot enjoy sex when the wife is pregnant. If he wants to enjoy sex at such a time, he may go to another wife who is not pregnant. These are laws mentioned in the Manu-samhita and other scriptures."

Thus his so-called "broader definition" of "no illicit sex" should more appropriately be called instead the "bogus definition" of "no illicit sex." Such bogus preaching should be stopped or not heard because if it continues our most glorious movement will be destroyed by the influence of the personality of Kali.

Our duty is to present Krishna consciousness exactly as Srila Prabhupada has given it to us. This the parampara system, the system of disciplic succession. If we change what Srila Prabhupada has given us presenting something different the disciplic succession will be broken and the science of Krishna will be lost.

If we can make a broader definition of "no illicit sex," since Srila Prabhupada often simply says "no meat eating" can we also make a broader definition of "no meat eating" which allows us to eat fish and eggs? What is your opinion?

So, , do you see how such preaching, if not stopped, will destroy our movement?

Question: Should I Preach in Dangerous Places?

Hare Krishna Srila Gurudeva,

Please accept my obeisances.

All glories to you and Gurumata.

All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

Gurudeva, today I was thinking there are so many places in the world in desperate need of Krishna consciousness. For instance communist China or North Korea. Their government does not allow any kind of religion; these people are living their life forcefully surrendered to their dictator instead of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Sri Krishna. I have heard some of the youth in China are taking up a kind of renunciation toward the government, refusing to take part in any action there. But, they have no knowledge where to direct this renunciation.

It it certainly a very dangerous task to preach in such places, it is most likely a suicide mission, but I know that devotees went to Russia in the USSR days and were able to to do amazing preaching. Even Bhakti Tirtha Maharaja, a black bodied devotee went there to preach even though he stuck out like a sore thumb.

Is attempting to preach in such places something you would recommend? It seems like a great opportunity to do something huge for Krishna. Please help me understand if this is something I should meditate upon and think of ideas how to perform such a task, or if it is simply waste of my time and too dangerous of a mission.

Your eternal servant,

Answer: Chant in Humble State of Mind and Preach

From: Tavua, Fiji

My Dear Bhakta Avatar,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

The great power of chanting is that if one purely chants anywhere he can deliver the whole world.

In this regard Srila Prabhupada describes as follows in his purport to Sri Caitanya Caritamrita, Adi Lila, Chapter 7, Text 83:

"A sincere student aurally receives the holy name from the spiritual master, and after being initiated he follows the regulative principles given by the spiritual master. When the holy name is properly served in this way, automatically the spiritual nature of the holy name spreads; in other words, the devotee becomes qualified in offenselessly chanting the holy name. When one is completely fit to chant the holy name in this way, he is eligible to make disciples all over the world, and he actually becomes jagad-guru. Then the entire world, under his influence, begins to chant the holy names of the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra."

So the most powerful thing you can do to bless all the fallen souls of this age is to purely chant the Hare Krishna completely free from the ten offenses. And then in that purified state of mind preach the glories of the Lord to whomever you meet.

In this connection Srila Prabhupada told us in a Caitanya-caritāmṛta class in Maypur on April 1, 1975:

"..if you can propagate Kṛṣṇa consciousness constantly, then, by spreading this Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement, you can make the whole world Kṛṣṇa conscious, and then it will be Vaikuṇṭha."

I hope this meets you in the best of health.
