Does liberation mean only merging into the brahmajyoti (the divine light) or there is more to it than just merging? Are there any scriptural references for it?

Question: What is Liberation?
Does liberation mean only merging into the brahmajyoti (the divine light) or there is more to it than just merging? Are there any scriptural references for it?

Answer: Developing Pure Love of God
In the Srimad Bhagavatam, Tenth Canto, Chapter 2, Text 32 we read:
ye 'nye 'ravindākṣa vimukta-māninas
tvayy asta-bhāvād aviśuddha-buddhayaḥ
āruhya kṛcchreṇa paraṁ padaṁ tataḥ
patanty adho 'nādṛta-yuṣmad-aṅghrayaḥ
“O lotus-eyed Lord, although nondevotees who accept severe austerities and penances to achieve the highest position may think themselves liberated, their intelligence is impure. They fall down from their position of imagined superiority because they have no regard for Your lotus feet.”
This is describing the liberation of merging into the brahmajyoti. Actually it is not real liberation. It is an imaginary liberation only because after some time such so-called liberated persons fall back down again into material existence. It is compared to an airplane that can fly for some time in the sky, but then has to eventually come down. The real liberation is developing pure love for God. That is on the pure spiritual platform from which one never falls back again into material existence.
