Follow the Path of Great Authorities

One has to follow the authorities. This is spoken by Maharaja Yudhisthira the Mahabharata, Vana-parva (313.117):

Mahajano yena gatah sa panthah

"The pathway of the great authorities must be followed."

Otherwise, if we simply depend on our own interpretations of the scriptures, will can easily misunderstand what it actually means to follow the different scriptural injunctions and end doing things which will keep us entangled in material existence. Also if we do no follow the actual great authorities we can easily be misled by rascals who artificially pose themselves as great authorities. The great authorities who are those who are coming in disciplic succession from Krishna and who present the teachings of Krishna exactly as He has given them in the Bhagavad-gita without any addition or adulteration.

Question: Chant Silently 24 Hours Daily Without Beads?

Please accept my obeisances, Srila Gurudeva,

What is the harm if one chants the Hare Krishna Mahamantra all the time silently in his mind but without rosary (japa) bead?

Thanks,
Abhiram

Answer: You Are Not Able to Do That

But you are not able to do that. Your mind is filled up with an ocean of material thoughts in which you are currently drowning. That’s why to help you concentrate you need to audibly chant the Hare Krishna mahamantra as much as possible on chanting beds. This wonderful mantra given to us by God Himself is the boat that will carry you across this ocean of birth and death back to your original and eternal home in that most wondrous spiritual sky. So-called silent meditation will keep you here drowning in this vast material ocean.
