Wonderful Russian Vaisnavas

The devotees in Kaliningrad, Russia are simply wonderful. To be with them for several days sharing the wonderful nectar of Krishna was certainly a most sublime treat. We had the most enlivening kirtans, well-attended lectures, and stimulating question and answer sessions. With loving exchanges as sweet as this you'd have to be crazy not to be a devotee of Krishna.

Question: Will Congregational Chanting Solve Water Shortage?

Dear Guru Maharaja,

In the Bhagavad-gita the Supreme Lord Krishna states that timely and sufficient rains are produced by performance of yajna (sacrfice). As stated in the purport Srila Prabhupada states that the only yajna recommended for this age is sankirtan yajna, congregational chanting of the holy names of God.

Recently in India and especially in some parts of the state of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh people are facing an acute shortage of water. All lakes and dams have dried up. People have to walk a lot to get potable water and there are fights when the government tanker arrives to distribute water. All this was due to insufficient rains last year.

If the people in these regions perform sankirtan yajna will their problems be solved? Currently scientists do not believe these teachings of the Gita and they try to produce artificial rain. Will this solve the water crisis?

Thank you for your time,
Your servant,
Deepanshu.

Answer: Yes, If Everyone Will Chant.

The artificial attempt to produce rain will not be successful. If they want rain they can get it by sankirtana yajna, the congregational chanting of the holy names of God as confirmed by Lord Sri Krishna in the Bhagavad-gita:

annād bhavanti bhūtāni
parjanyād anna-sambhavaḥ
yajñād bhavati parjanyo
yajñaḥ karma-samudbhavaḥ

"All living bodies subsist on food grains, which are produced from rains. Rains are produced by performance of yajna [sacrifice], and yajna is born of prescribed duties."
--Bhagavad-gita 3.14

In this connection Srila Prabhupada writes as follows:

"In this age of Kali. there is great scarcity and ignorance; nonetheless, everyone can perform sankirtana-yajna. Every family in every society can conduct sankirtana-yajna at least every evening. In this way there will be no disturbance or scarcity of rain. It is essential for the people in this age to perform the sankirtana-yajna in order to be materially happy and to advance spiritually."--from purport to SB 5.4.3

There is practical proof of this as explained by Srila Prabhupada in a letter to his disciple, Revatinandana Das:

"We have just completed our pandal program in Hyderabad and it was very, very successful. In that portion there was no rain for two years, but due to our sankirtana yajna the rain came and everyone was happy that we came to make it rain,"
