Make Disciples for Your Guru
Srila Prabhupada trained us in all aspects of Krishna consciousness. One of the most important things is to understand the process of disciplic succession. In this regard on 2 December 1975 when Srila Prabhupada was in New Delhi he wrote to his disciple Tusta Krishna as follows:
"Keep trained up very rigidly and then you are bona fide guru, and you can accept disciples on the same principle. But as a matter of etiquette it is the custom that during the lifetime of your spiritual master you bring the prospective disciples to him, and in his absence or disappearance you can accept disciples without any limitation. This is the law of disciplic succession. I want to see my disciples become bona fide Spiritual Master and spread Krishna consciousness very widely, that will make me and Krishna very happy."
Therefore when one's guru is on the planet and one is preaching, one's duty is to make disciples for his spiritual master, not that he tries to make his own followers and thus try to be a competing guru with his own spiritual master.
Srila Prabhupada describe in his purport to Srimad-Bhagavatam, Canto 3, Chapter 4, Text 26 the danger of the offense know as impertinently surpassing a greater personality, that by such an offense one loses his duration of life, his opulence, fame, and piety and the blessings of all the world. Therefore the disciple should be very careful to always remain the humble servant of his spiritual masters by bringing prospective disciples to him for training, not to try to train them independently of him.
