When Greed Becomes the Best Available Path

Greed for wealth, women, and power destroys one's ability to become a spiritually awakened being. However if one is very greedy to advance in his Krishna consciousness, this is a great boon. In fact, Srila Prabhupada describes that this greed for bhakti is the best path available. In this regard it is stated by Srila Rupa Goswami:

kṛṣṇa-bhakti-rasa-bhāvitā matiḥ
krīyatāṁ yadi kuto 'pi labhyate
tatra laulyam api mūlyam ekalaṁ
janma-koṭi-sukṛtair na labhyate

"Pure devotional service in Krishna consciousness cannot be had even by pious activity in hundreds and thousands of lives. It can be attained only by paying one price-that is, intense greed to obtain it. If it is available somewhere, one must purchase it without delay.'
--Padyāvalī 14

Therefore greed should not be given up. It should be purified by engaging it in the service of Krishna. We should be greedy to awaken our dormant Krishna consciousness.

Question: Should We Pray for Material Benefit?

If we want some material benefit, since we are living in the material world, should we ask Lord Krishna for it, or will Krishna automatically provide for His devotee? Someone said that even if we are sincerely cultivating bhakti, we still have to ask for material things. Is this true?

As a normal ordinary person I have desire, anger, etc. Through Krishna consciousness I am slowly getting rid of these and maintaining calmness, coolness, and composure. But in spite of chanting with beads and without beads, the material energy pulls me to ask the Lord for some material benefits. Is it right? I am 57 years old.

How to get rid of this? Your answer would be highly appreciated.

Sincerely Yours

Answer: Only Pray for Pure Krishna Bhakti

As a child growing up did you ever have to ask your parents to feed you? The child does not have to ask. Since the parents love the child they naturally supply him with sufficient foodstuffs without his having to ask. Simply the child should inquire from the parents how he can serve.

Similarly, since God loves us He has already made arrangements for our material necessities. Begging him for these things is not very pleasing to Him because it indicates that we do not trust Him. Therefore instead of praying for material necessities we should only pray to the Lord begging us to engage us in His devotional service.
