How to Become Free From All Material Desires

Lord Sri Krishna very wonderfully reveals to us in Bhagavad-gita, Chapter 2, Text 70 as follows:

āpūryamāṇam acala-pratiṣṭhaṁ
samudram āpaḥ praviśanti yadvat
tadvat kāmā yaṁ praviśanti sarve
sa śāntim āpnoti na kāma-kāmī

"A person who is not disturbed by the incessant flow of desires—that enter like rivers into the ocean, which is ever being filled but is always still—can alone achieve peace, and not the man who strives to satisfy such desires."

Srila Prabhupada gives the following wonderful purport:

"Although the vast ocean is always filled with water, it is always, especially during the rainy season, being filled with much more water. But the ocean remains the same—steady; it is not agitated, nor does it cross beyond the limit of its brink. That is also true of a person fixed in Kṛṣṇa consciousness. As long as one has the material body, the demands of the body for sense gratification will continue. The devotee, however, is not disturbed by such desires, because of his fullness. A Kṛṣṇa conscious man is not in need of anything, because the Lord fulfills all his material necessities. Therefore he is like the ocean—always full in himself. Desires may come to him like the waters of the rivers that flow into the ocean, but he is steady in his activities, and he is not even slightly disturbed by desires for sense gratification. That is the proof of a Kṛṣṇa conscious man—one who has lost all inclinations for material sense gratification, although the desires are present. Because he remains satisfied in the transcendental loving service of the Lord, he can remain steady, like the ocean, and therefore enjoy full peace. Others, however, who want to fulfill desires even up to the limit of liberation, what to speak of material success, never attain peace. The fruitive workers, the salvationists, and also the yogīs who are after mystic powers are all unhappy because of unfulfilled desires. But the person in Kṛṣṇa consciousness is happy in the service of the Lord, and he has no desires to be fulfilled. In fact, he does not even desire liberation from the so-called material bondage. The devotees of Kṛṣṇa have no material desires, and therefore they are in perfect peace."

Srila Prabhupada has very wonderfully guided us to have only spiritual desires. In this way we can have perfect peace and happiness. If one is tormented by many material desire, he should desire to become free from all material desires and only desire to satisfy Krishna with his every thought, word, and deed in all times, places, and circumstances. This desire will liberate him giving him complete, total satisfaction.

Question: How to Avoid Offenses to Devotees

Hare Krishna Maharaj Ji 🙏🏻🌹
Please accept my pranam 🌹🙏🏻

At times we tend to get bitter experiences within devotee community and we are unable to forget and continuously commit vaishnava aparadha (offenses to devotees) within. Anytime that devotee is serving Krishna I am thinking of apradhas done. What to do? Like this I will keep committing offences which will surely effect my sadhana. What to do? I am trying to tell myself that I am also not pure. I have also done deadly karmas and am still committing offenses against that Vaishnava. Please guide me.

Answer: Be Tolerant of the Mistakes of Others

From: ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

My Dear Surbhi,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

You are not perfect and the other devotees are not perfect. So you should be tolerant of the mistakes of others. In this connection Srila Prabhupada explained in a lecture on Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.2.18 given in Los Angeles on August 21, 1972:

"So our principle should be not to disassociate ourself from the devotees. Narottama dāsa Ṭhākura therefore sings, tāṅdera caraṇa-sebi-bhakta-sane bās, janame janame hoy ei abhilāṣ: 'I desire birth after birth to serve the ācāryas and to live with devotees.' So our this association, society's is giving these two opportunity: you serve the purpose or the orders of the ācāryas and live with devotees. Then you will be secure in devotional service. Tāṅdera caraṇa-sebi-bhakta-sane bās. Bhakta-sane bās is very important thing. Even there is little inconvenience, still we should stick to live with the devotees. Then we shall be profited."

I hope this meets you in the best of health.
