Question: Only For Producing Children?

I have been practicing Krishna consciousness for about seven years and my wife for about four years since we got married. We follow all four regulative principles strictly, 16 rounds chanting, observe Ekadasi, service at the temple, etc. We are aspiring (to one of the Guru Maharajas) and would like to get initiated very soon. But whenever I talk about initiation, my wife is not so much willing, ever since she heard from one of the matajis' that once we are initiated then we can't have sex unless you are planning to have children. Is it so? Is this a requirement to get imitated?

Answer: Only For Procreation, Not Recreation

Thank you very much for openly, honestly inquiring from me. This is a very important issue that at the present moment is being grossly misunderstood by many ISKCON devotees.

Your wife has been informed correctly. According to the sublime teachings of Srila Prabhupada initiated devotees engage in this only for procreation and not for recreation. You can read more about Srila Prabhupada's teachings in this regard in my essay: Spiritual Perfection in Household Life. Indulging in it other than for procreation is illicit and is breaking one of the four regulative principles.

The bona fide spiritual master does not allow his disciples to engage in this other than for procreation. Bogus gurus who allow their disciples this indulgence in order to increase their number of followers remain entangled in the cycle of birth and death along with their misguided followers.

This desire is simply an itch. If you do not scratch the itch and instead engage yourself nicely in Krishna's service, the itch will go away in due course of time, and you will be a much happier person because of it.

So the conclusion is that you and your wife should immediately stop this nasty habit, which keeps you both locked up in the bodily conception of male/female and thus perpetuates your entanglement in the cycle of repeated birth and death. Now you both must fully qualify yourselves for initiation by strictly following all four of the regulative principles. Only then will you both be proper candidates for going back to home, back to Godhead.

Heart Melting Reunion with Amarendra and Gayatri

On Friday 26 June 2015 I was blessed with the greatest good fortune of meeting with two of the dearest devotees of my entire life, His Grace Amarendra Prabhu and his good wife, Srimati Gayatri devi dasi. I am eternally indebted to these great souls for how much they helped me in my spiritual life when I was a young devotee.
