Gifted with Milk Sweets While Transiting Through London

On our stopover in London on our way to Latvia, we were greeted at the airport by two of my students. I was blessed with receiving the gift of the most wonderful burfi and sandesh made from the milk of Krishna's cows at London's Bhaktivedanta Manor. The milk sweets at the Bhaktivedanta Manor are some of the best in the entire world. Their taste is absolutely phenomenal. And the spiritual benefit of honoring such sweets is unlimited.

Question: What is Offenseless Chanting?

Hare Krishna Srila Gurudeva,

Please accept my dandavats,
All Glories to Your Grace and Srimati Gurumata,
All Glories to Srila Prabhupada

In Purport to SB 3.33.6, Srila Prabhupada says that "A person born in a family of the low caste which is accustomed to eat dogs is so positioned due to his past sinful activities, but by chanting or hearing once in pureness, or in an offenseless manner, he is immediately relieved of the sinful reaction. Not only is he relieved of the sinful reaction, but he immediately achieves the result of all purificatory processes"

1. In what stage of sadhana-bhakti (Faith to Love of Godhead) one is situated if one has chanted Holy Name offenselessly even once
2. Is person who has chanted Holy Name offenselessly only once already liberated from material entanglement?
3. If a child chants Hare Krishna once imitating parents then is this offenseless chant?
4. Many people on street chant Hare Krishna when devotees perform congregational chanting. Is this offenseless?

Your eternal servant,
Amala Purana Das

Answer: Offenseless in Practice and the Offenseless Stage

Srila Prabhupada explains as follows in his purport to SB 2.2.30:

"The simple process of offenselessly chanting and hearing the holy name of the Lord will gradually promote one very soon to the stage of emancipation. There are three stages in chanting the holy name of the Lord. The first stage is the offensive chanting of the holy name, and the second is the reflective stage of chanting the holy name. The third stage is the offenseless chanting of the holy name of the Lord. In the second stage only, the stage of reflection, between the offensive and offenseless stages, one automatically attains the stage of emancipation. And in the offenseless stage, one actually enters into the kingdom of God, although physically he may apparently be within the material world.”

Kindly note in the above quote that Srila Prabhupada mentions offenseless chanting in two different ways. He says that by offenseless chanting one will quickly come to emancipation, the reflective stage in between the offensive stage and the offenseless stage. So there is offenseless chanting in practice and offenseless chanting in perfection. In other words strictly avoiding the ten offenses is offenseless chanting even though one may not have attained the offenseless stage when one enters into the kingdom of God within his heart even though externally situated within the material world.

So you have to understand the meaning of “offenseless" according to context, the way in which Srila Prabhupada is utilizing it. With this understanding here are the answers to your questions:

1. In what stage of sadhana-bhakti (Faith to Love of Godhead) one is situated if one has chanted Holy Name offenselessly even once.
Answer: He is at least at the beginning stage.

2. Is person who has chanted Holy Name offenselessly only once already liberated from material entanglement?
Answer: If he does not sin again.

3. If a child chants Hare Krishna once imitating parents then is this offenseless chant?
Answers: If he is chanting without any material motives it is certainly offenseless.

4. Many people on street chant Hare Krishna when devotees perform congregational chanting. Is this offenseless?
Answer: If they are chanting without any material motives, it is offenseless.

Kindly note Srila Prabhupada's explanation in his purport to SB 1.18.19:

“To chant the holy name under the direction of a pure devotee is offenseless chanting. Offenseless chanting of the holy name of the Lord is transcendental, and, therefore, such chanting can at once purify one from the effects of all kinds of previous sins.”
