You Are Existing Eternally

You have always existed. This means that there was never a time in the past when you did not exist. Nor will there ever be a time in the future when you will not exist. Therefore your present life is not the all in all. But in spite of this, your present life is most important because now you are in the human form of life with sufficient intelligence to take up the process of spiritual awakening for escaping the wheel of birth and death and returning to your original position as Krishna's eternal servant in His transcendental kingdom. That you are now reading this means that not only do you have a human form. You are also now in contact with the all-liberating Vedic wisdom. So take advantage of your unlimited good fortune by fully surrendering yourself to Lord Sri Krishna right now under the guidance of the bona fide spiritual master and making your life perfect.

Question: Atma, Paramatma, and Japa

Pranam Srila Gurudeva,

I have two different questions. Which I respectfully put before you to be solved.

1) Paramatma resides in heart. Where does atma reside? In the heart itself side by side or somewhere else?

2) I have been chanting Hare Krishna Mahamantra for the last one week at the early morning. After taking bath I start around 4 to 4.30 A.M., firstly with Srila Prabhupada Pranati and then Panch tattva Maha-mantra as instructed by local ISKCON Temple. However, by 6.30 A.M. it is 8 or 10 rounds only. The duration of this time is feasibly suitable for me somehow in the given circumstances. However, when I willed to complete 16 rounds I chanted the Mahamantra very fast and succeeded. Bu at the same time I felt that I completed the chanting mechanically. Quantity wise it was O.K., but quality wise it was not worth to be satisfied.

So, my question is: Should I go with the quality with less rounds completed or with the quantity of 16 rounds? Please kindly do not suggest to increase the time length.

Thank you very much for your kind consideration and help!

One of your servants,

Abhiram

Answer: Side by Side and Qualitative/Quantitative Japa

Srila Prabhupada explains:

"The Supreme Personality of Godhead, as Paramatma, is sitting within everyone's heart, trying to elevate everyone to the platform of Krishna consciousness. Therefore He is called atma-bhavana. The Supreme Personality of Godhead is always trying to give the individual soul the intelligence to understand about Himself. He is always with the individual as a friend sitting by the side of a friend, and He gives facilities to all living entities according to their desires."
—from purport to Srimad Bhagavatam, Canto 4, Chapter 22, Text 16

So the Lord and living being are both seated in the heart. They are side by side.

Srila Prabhupada said that sixteen rounds of japa could be done in one and a half to two hours. He commented that it should take five or six minutes to chant a round, although he admitted that it might not be possible in the beginning. So continue chanting and hearing each word carefully. With practice you will naturally speed up in due course of time.
