Reverse Engineer Your Lust into Pure Love

Real love does not exist in this material world. Real love is pure love devoid of any tinges of selfishness or greed. We begin our sojourn here in this material existence because of our lusty, selfish desire to be the Supreme. What we call love is only lust masquerading as love. And when our selfish desires are not satisfied out lust is transformed into anger. This is described as follows in the Bhagavad-gita:

kāma eṣa krodha eṣa
rajo-guṇa-samudbhavaḥ
mahāśano mahā-pāpmā
viddhy enam iha vairiṇam

"The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: It is lust only, Arjuna, which is born of contact with the material mode of passion and later transformed into wrath, and which is the all-devouring sinful enemy of this world."--Bhagavad-gita 3.37

Srila Prabhupada describes in his purport to this verse that wrath is then transformed into illusion, which keeps us bound up tightly in this material existence. Since it is lust that causes us to fall down into this this material world, lust is our greatest enemy. The essence of lust is the desire to enjoy separately from the Lord.

The key to getting out of our entanglement in the cycle of birth and death is to reverse engineer our perverted desire to be the Supreme Enjoyer by doing everything for the enjoyment of Krishna. This is called Krishna consciousness or devotional service. This one simple stroke of engaging in the service of Krishna drives away illusion and completely frees us from lust, anger, and greed and brings us back to our original liberated position as the eternal associates of Lord Krishna serving Him forever in His divine pastimes in that wondrous spiritual sky.

Question: At What Stage of Bhakti Is Brahma-Bhuta Attained?

At which stage of bhakti (sraddha, sadhu-sanga, bhajana kriya, anartha nirvritti, nista, ruci, bhava, and prema) does one attain the stage known as self-realization, the brahma-bhuta stage?

Your servant

Answer: Brahma-Bhuta is the Foundation of Bhakti

The serious practitioner of bhakti yoga or Krishna consciousness is already situated on the stage of self-realization (brahma-bhuta) because brahma-bhuta is the foundation of devotional service. He is firmly convinced that he is not his body and therefore fully engages himself unflinchingly in the devotional service of Lord Sri Krishna with great, undying patience, determination, and enthusiasm. Thus he attains the supreme perfection of pure devotional service.
