Knife Scissors Argument
The Scientists Will Not Admit Defeat
Thought for Day--6 April 2026
We find this in the section of the Vedabase entitled Prabhupāda Tells Short Stories:Prabhupāda wanted his devotee-scientists to form the Bhaktivedanta Institute. By writing books and giving lectures, they should destroy the theories that life comes from matter and that there is no supreme being. The atheistic scientists will be very stubborn, he warned them. To illustrate the stubbornness of the materialists, Prabhupāda told the story of “scissors philosophy.”
Two men were arguing about which cutting instrument should be used, a knife or scissors. “Knife!” said one. “No, scissors!” said the other. Their talk became a heated fight.
“If you don’t agree,” said the man who advocated the knife, “I will throw you in the river.”
“No, I’ll never change my mind. It’s scissors!” So the knife advocate threw the other into the swift river. He swam for a while but became exhausted and began to sink. But he was so stubborn about holding his point of view, that even after he was sinking under the water to his death, he held up his arm and crossed his fingers back and forth like a pair of scissors cutting.
“The scientists will be like that,” said Prabhupāda. “Even after defeating them with all logic, still they will say, ‘Life comes from matter.’” But more sane and innocent people would be convinced by Vedic presentation, that life comes from life.

All Glories to Your Grace and to Srimati Gurumataji
All Glories to Srila Prabhupada
Within our small office circle, one of my senior is an expert at office works and also dedicated in spiritual activities - daily worship, organising festivals etc. He has been most supportive in facilitating weekly Bhagavad Gita discourses amongst few office goers. His powerful impact has result in many of us choosing to avoid meat-eating & observe ekadashi fasting. As such I find much to learn from him - bold, focused, enthusiastic. Hailing from pious yet simple family he has much reverence for demigod worship as essential in everyday life.
However, based on my conversations with him, I felt that he considers worship of demigods similar to worship of Krsna. He opined that one shouldn't reject food offered to demigods (without offering to Krsna first). I am confused at this juncture - whether to reject such food stuffs to strictly follow Bhagavad Gita (which might displease Sir and fellow men) or accept such food stuffs to adjust as per time place & circumstances.
I avoid getting into contradictions on swith him to maintain social decorum & have his precious support for Bhagavad Gita discourses.
I humbly beg Your Grace to please help clarify the confusion.

Answer
From: Ljubljana, SloveniaMy Dear Prabhupada Das,
Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Śrīla Prabhupāda.
We Krishnites are the best worshippers of the demigods. Since Krishna is the God of the gods when we worship Him we are worshipping all 330 million demigods automatically. If we were to worship them separately within the course of a year, we'd need to worship more than 900 thousand of them every day. Thus worshipping Krishna is the most practical way to worship the demigods.
Because they are all great devotees Srila Rupa Goswami has ordered us not to disrespect them.
The other day here in Ljubljana, Slovenia I consulted an Ayurvedic doctor from Kerala, Inda to get health guidance. His normal fee was 85 Euros. But he asked me instead to give a donation to his Ganesh deity. Prabhupada taught us to bow down with our left side to Krishna and our right side to the demigods. So I bowed to his Ganesh deity with my right side towards him and gave a donation of 50 Euros.
The Vedic wisdom teaches us to honor both Kṛṣṇa and the demigods. In this connection, it is important to understand that the demigods prefer that we worship Kṛṣṇa, or Viṣṇu. This is confirmed in the Padma Purāṇa, which describes that when Pārvatī asked Lord Śiva what kind of worship is best, Lord Śiva told her that the worship of Lord Viṣṇu is the best.
Thus, the demigods become most pleased when we offer them the prasadam of Lord Krishna. So to please them we give them Krishna prasadam.
I hope this meets you in the best of health and in a cheerful mood.
Your ever well-wisher,
