Are You Running Like a Foolish Hamster?
Thought for Day--2 April 2026
Are you like a foolish hamster running nowhere as fast as you can? We laugh at the foolish hamster illusioned by his hamster wheel, but we are doing the same thing ourselves running as fast as we can after things we foolishly think that will satisfy us when in fact none of them will satisfy us at at all.So, let's get off the hamster wheel and do what will actually satisfy us:
sa vai puṁsāṁ paro dharmo
yato bhaktir adhokṣaje
ahaituky apratihatā
yayātmā suprasīdati
The supreme occupation [dharma] for all humanity is that by which men can attain to loving devotional service unto the transcendent Lord. Such devotional service must be unmotivated and uninterrupted to completely satisfy the self. (SB 1.2.6)

I hope you are doing well.
I am a student currently pursuing CA, and alongside my studies, I am sincerely trying to follow the path of bhakti. However, I am facing a challenge internally that I would like some guidance on.
I often come across teachings about controlling lust, but most of the content I find is either very general or more focused on men. I am trying to understand how to deal with such thoughts from a practical and psychological perspective, especially as a young woman in today’s environment.
At times, past impressions and thoughts create strong distractions in my mind. Even when I try to control them, they feel difficult to manage consistently. This creates confusion and becomes an obstacle in maintaining focus, both in my studies and in my spiritual practices.
I am not looking for theoretical advice, but practical guidance:How to manage and reduce such thoughts effectively
How to maintain mental clarity and discipline
How to balance natural emotions while staying committed to the bhakti path
I would be very grateful to learn.
Thank you for your time and guidance.

Answer
My Dear Devotee,
Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Śrīla Prabhupāda.
This is a sincere and important question. The goal is not to violently suppress the mind, but to purify, redirect, and regulate it so that it becomes your friend on the path of bhakti.
Lust is not something unnatural. As explained in the Bhagavad-gita, it is a perverted reflection of our original love for Krishna. Lust means the desire to enjoy for oneself, whereas love means the desire to serve Krishna. Therefore, the process is not to destroy desire, but to transform it.
To do this, we must first regulate our inputs. Avoid social media, movies, and music that agitate the mind. Be careful about what you see, hear, and think. The mind is like a sponge—it absorbs everything.
When a lustful thought arises, do not entertain it. Immediately shift your attention—chant Hare Krishna, read something spiritual, or engage yourself in service. The earlier you catch the thought, the easier it is to stop.
Keep yourself actively engaged. An idle mind becomes a playground for lust. Stay busy in devotional service, maintain a regulated daily routine, and take care of your physical health. At the same time, associate closely with serious devotees and avoid frivolous or overly intimate association that stimulates the mind.
A strong morning program is essential. Rise early, chant attentively, and hear from śāstra. A powerful morning creates a powerful day. Along with this, maintain a regulated lifestyle—proper sleep, a clean environment, and a diet of prasādam. Disorder in lifestyle leads to disorder in the mind.
It is also important to understand that feeling attraction sometimes arises naturally. Even the great Vaiṣṇava ācārya Yamunācārya would recall his previous sense enjoyment and immediately reject such thoughts with disgust. The problem is not that such thoughts arise, but that we choose to entertain them.
Therefore, do not become discouraged. Do not hate yourself. Simply refuse to dwell on such thoughts and redirect your mind toward Krishna. Transform your emotions—let desire become longing for Krishna, attachment become attachment to service, and emotion become kīrtana and prayer.
The real solution is to develop a higher taste. As stated in the Gita, one gives up lower pleasures when experiencing something higher. Without spiritual happiness, suppression will not last. Therefore deepen your chanting, hear Krishna-kathā, and serve with sincerity. When the heart becomes filled with higher taste, lower desires naturally fade away.
Progress on this path is gradual. There may be struggles and setbacks, but do not be discouraged. Even great souls advanced step by step.
You are not alone in this struggle. By sincerely practicing bhakti, what now appears as a disturbance will gradually become purified into deep and steady devotion.
I hope this meets you in the best of health and in a cheerful mood.
Your ever well-wisher,
Sankarshan Das Adhikari
