Prabhupada Instructs His Disciples

The Guru's Order is Our Life and Soul

Thought for Day--14 April 2026

Śrīla Prabhupāda poignantly states as follows in his purport to Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, Third Canto, Chapter 22, Text 7:

This combination, the instruction of the spiritual master and the faithful execution of the instruction by the disciple, makes the entire process perfect. Śrīla Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura describes in his explanation of the verse in Bhagavad-gītā, vyavasāyātmikā buddhiḥ, that one who wants to be certain to achieve spiritual success must take the instruction from the spiritual master as to what his particular function is. He should faithfully try to execute that particular instruction and should consider that his life and soul. The faithful execution of the instruction which he receives from the spiritual master is the only duty of a disciple, and that will bring him perfection. One should be very careful to receive the message from the spiritual master through the ears and execute it faithfully. That will make one's life successful.

Some fools and rascals try to minimize the importance of this instruction, but neglecting it is spiritual suicide—for both the one who gives such advice and the one who follows it.

In the beginning, it is essential to follow the instructions of the spiritual master, even if one’s understanding is not yet mature. However, to remain steady on the path of Kṛṣṇa bhakti, one must develop a mature, scientific understanding of the process in order to become firmly fixed for the duration of one’s life. This is accomplished by regularly reading the Bhagavad-gītā and other authorized Vedic literatures, as well as by regularly hearing from and studying the writings of one’s spiritual master and other advanced devotees.

It should also be noted that if a spiritual master instructs one not to surrender to Kṛṣṇa, he should immediately be rejected as bogus. This principle is clearly illustrated in the pastime of Bali Mahārāja, who rejected the instruction of his spiritual master, Śukrācārya, not to give charity to Vāmanadeva. By neglecting that order and giving charity to Vāmanadeva, he became one of the twelve great mahājanas—the most celebrated devotees in the history of Vaiṣṇavism.

Dear Gurudeva,
Please accept my humble obeisances.

I am writing to seek correction and clarity on an important matter. Kindly forgive my directness, but I feel it is necessary. Do we truly understand the importance of devotee association, or are we overlooking it in practice despite knowing its value?

It appears that there may be a gap between what is acknowledged and how it is actually lived. If this understanding is incomplete or misapplied, then I humbly ask to be corrected. I do not wish to remain under any illusion or superficial appreciation.

Please instruct me clearly on how to properly recognize, prioritize, and honor devotee association in both thought and action.

I beg for your guidance and correction so that I may improve sincerely.

Your servant,
Göran

My Dear Göran,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Śrīla Prabhupāda.

To properly recognize, prioritize, and honor devotee association, one should associate with those who inspire remembrance of Kṛṣṇa and are faithful to guru, śāstra, and sādhus. Such association should be prioritized according to spiritual advancement, with one’s guru and advanced devotees taking precedence. Internally, one should avoid envy and criticism, and cultivate appreciation, seeing devotees as instruments of Kṛṣṇa’s mercy. Externally, one should offer respect, hear submissively, and render service according to one’s capacity. By seeking good association, serving devotees, and carefully avoiding offenses, one can steadily advance in Kṛṣṇa consciousness.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in a cheerful mood.

Your ever well-wisher,
Sankarshan Das Adhikari
