We Are Like Fish Out of the Water

Our actual position is that we are creatures of the spiritual world. Therefore our being here in this material world is a most unnatural, unhealthy situation just like a fish who has been cast by the waves of the ocean up onto the beach. He is in a miserable most pathetic situation. He will die because he cannot breathe there. He must be in the water to breathe. Unlike land animals, which have lungs to take in oxygen from the air, fish have gills to breathe in the oxygen contained in water.

What is the poor fish going to do? He can't swim back into the water. The high tide dumped him on the beach and will not return for another 12 hours to take him back into the water. He will die before that. But if some kindhearted soul sees him in agony on the beach and tosses him back into the water he will saved.

We are like that fish. And the spiritual master is that kindhearted soul who picks us up and throws us back into our natural spiritual existence. Therefore we always offer our respectful obeisances to that spiritual master because he is saving us from this material existence.

Question: Remembering the Spiritual Master When Dying

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All Glories to Srila Prabhupada!

Gurudeva,
I really appreciate your daily "Thought for the Day" emails. I read them daily before starting work. It helps ground me in Krishna Consciousness while dealing with materialistic co-workers.

After reading your "Thought for the Day" from April 20, 2021, the story of Ajamila, a question sprouted:

What happens to the person who at the time of death instead of calling out the Lord's name he calls out his spiritual master's name. Is there hope for this person?

Your humble servant,
Bhavesh

Answer: One Who Remembers Guru is Krishna's Best Devotee

My Dear Bhavesh,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

One who calls out his spiritual master's name at the time of death is strongly fixed in Krishna consciousness. His going back to home, back
to Godhead is sure.

We sing every morning in during the mangala-arati:

"yasya prasādād bhagavat-prasādo
yasyāprasādān na gatiḥ kuto 'pi
dhyāyan stuvaṁs tasya yaśas tri-sandhyaṁ
vande guroḥ śrī-caraṇāravindam"

which means:

"By the mercy of the spiritual master one receives the benediction of Kṛṣṇa. Without the grace of the spiritual master, one cannot make any advancement. Therefore, I should always remember and praise the spiritual master. At least three times a day I should offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of my spiritual master."

Therefore one who always remembers his spiritual master is the most advanced Krishna conscious devotee.

I hope this meets you in the best of health.
