Attitude, Not Aptitude, Determines Your Altitude

Regarding our spiritual progress the most important thing we possess is our attitude. In other words on the path of spiritual progress our attitude will either make us or break us. One who has trained his mind to see everything as the mercy of Krishna has perfected his attitude and will always be flying at a high altitude on the spiritual plane. On the other hand one who judges the merit or demerit of things based what is pleasing to his senses will remain stuck on the low material plane rotating in the cycle of birth and death for countless lifetimes.

Question: How to Know When I'm Chanting With Pure Love?

Hare Krishna, my dear Gurudeva.

Please accept my humble obeisances
All glories to Srila Prabhupada

By yours and Krishna's mercy, I have been able to stick to chanting 16 rounds or more of the Hare Krishna mahamantra daily. How do I know when I'm chanting with pure love for Krishna and when it is considered as just that I must do it every day? How do I improve the quality of my chanting so that I do it for Krishna only?

Hare Krishna,
Your servant,
Melanie B.

Answer: No Material Motives Means Pure Love

You are not being paid to chant Hare Krishna. Nor are you chanting to receive any material benedictions. Therefore although you are still on the neophyte stage your chanting is already on the basis of pure love. Regarding the stages of chanting, this is compared to a mango. When one purchases a mango he now has a mango. At the beginning the mango is green. But gradually that unripened green mango becomes transformed into a fully ripened juicy, sweet yellow mango. The beginning stage of chanting is compared to a green mango, and the mature stage of perfect chanting is compared to a fully ripened mango. So you already have the mango of pure love of God. Because you are presently on the neophyte stage your mango is green. But by faithfully chanting at least 16 rounds daily, following the four regulative principles (no illicit sex, not meat eating, no intoxication, and no gambling), and faithfully serving your spiritual master you will naturally and gradually progress to the stage of pure chanting, which is unlimitedly juicy sweet like a fully ripened mango. The secret of how to improve your chanting is to every day sincerely try to chant the most focused and most sincerely devotional rounds that you have ever chanted in your entire life. If every day you focus you mind in this way, very quickly you will attain the perfectional stage of pure love of Godhead.
