When Does One Realize His Rasa?

8 April 2025

There is a type of so-called initiation known as siddha-pranali initiation in which the initiate is told what is his rasa (his relationship with Krishna in the spiritual world) at the time of his initiation. This is bogus. It is not authorized because the one who is initiating him does not know what the initiate's rasa is in the spiritual world.

In this connection I have seen the example of a school teacher from the Western world who was initiated by a Radha Kunda babaji and was told what is his gopi name in Krishna's pastimes and that he should now meditate on being that gopi.

The authorized process of Krishna consciousness is to focus one hundred perfect on being the fully surrendered of Krishna according to the instructions that Krishna gives in the Bhagavad-gita. The devotee is meant to go step by step the achieve the ultimate goal of Krishna prema. It is not that one can bypass the previous steps and jump to Krishna prema. When reaches the highly advanced stage known as asakti (attachment) he automatically realizes his svarupa, his identity in Krishna's pastimes. So he does not need this so-called siddha pranali initiation,

In this connection Srila Prabhupada has written in The Nectar of Devotion:

"In this connection, we should be careful about the so-called siddha-praṇālī. The siddha-praṇālī process is followed by a class of men who are not very authorized and who have manufactured their own way of devotional service. They imagine that they have become associates of the Lord simply by thinking of themselves like that. This external behavior is not at all according to the regulative principles. The so-called siddha-praṇālī process is followed by the prākṛta-sahajiyā, a pseudosect of so-called Vaiṣṇavas. In the opinion of Rūpa Gosvāmī, such activities are simply disturbances to the standard way of devotional service."

I am shocked to see that one of my Godbrothers has disobeyed Srila Prabhupada and embraced this so-called siddha-praṇālī process thinking that now he is a very, very advanced devotee who knows his gopi identity in Krishna's pastimes. The actual fact is that when one rejects his spiritual master his spiritual life is finished and he will have to suffer greatly,

In the spiritual world there are not only gopis. There are four other kinds of relationships that one can have with Krishna: passive adoration (santa rasa), servitude (dasya rasa), friendship (sakya rasa) and parenthood (vatsalya rasa).

Transcendental Correspondence

Please accept my humble obeisance srila gurudeva,
All glories to Prabhupada,

A doubt. Sri Krishna says that we should see action in inaction. Then what are our inactions?

Yours sincerely
Shivani

Answer

From: Kaunas, Lithuania

My Dear Shivani,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Śrīla Prabhupāda.

Action generates karma. Inaction does not. Therefore when one acts in devotional service his action is inaction because it does not generate karma. On the other hand one who practices so-called inaction by giving up everything to meditate for his own benefit without performing devotional service may think that he is practicing inaction. But actually he is engaged in action because he is still generating karma by the killing of so many microbes by the combined action of his respiratory system and his immune system. Thus he will have to take a birth after birth as a microbe for each and every microbe that he has killed.

I hope this meets you in the best of health
and in a cheerful mood.

Your ever well-wisher,

Sankarshan Das Adhikari

My Spiritual Journey in a Nutshell

As an American youth I was taught to believe in the. "American dream": Study hard, get a good education and a good job to get a good wife some good kids in a good house to enjoy a good life. But when I got to college I realized that this was not enough. I wanted to know what is the meaning of life, but no one could tell me. So I took to the path of self-realization and was blessed in 1968 with the Hare Krishna mantra and the worship of Radha and Krishna. (I did not know about ISKCON.) This inspired me to drop out of college and renounce the world to become a holy beggar in India. But on the way to India I realized that to renounce everything I had to ultimately renounce renunciation itself and accept something transcendental Thus I embraced the mission of delivering the world from chaos. For this purpose I adopted the life a singer/songwriter who in 1969 became recognized and very much appreciated. In 1971, seeking spiritual perfection, I followed the example of Lord Jesus Christ and prayed to God how I could become His perfect servant. Then God revealed to me path of pure Krishna bhakti as taught by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami. On the most auspicious day of 12 August 1971 he accepted me as his disciple. Now on his order and under his most expert guidance I have fully devoted my life for awakening pure love of God within my heart and for making the entire world Krishna conscious.
