The Bonafide Disciple Never Rejects His Spiritual Master
9 April 2025
Sometimes we hear the philosophy that when the diksha guru (initiating guru) is not present we can follow the instructions of someone else accepting him as our siksha guru (instructing guru). This is bona fide if we accept the siksha guru to help us connect with our diksha guru. But if we take the siksha guru as our prime authority and relegate our initiating guru to a secondary position that is a great offense. In this connection we should note Srila Prabhupada's teachings in this connection given by him in a letter to his disciple Malati devi dasi:
"Just like Krishna can be present simultaneously in millions of places. Similarly, the Spiritual Master also can be present wherever the disciple wants. A Spiritual Master is the principle, not the body. Just like a television can be seen in thousands of places by the principle of relay monitoring."
Note that Srila Prabhupada writes "wherever the disciple wants." Thus if the disciple does not want this connection with his spiritual master he will not experience it. Such a person is a disciple in name only. He is not really a disciple. He will be wandering helplessly in the cycle of birth and death. But if the disciple wants this connection he will experience how his spiritual master is with him at every minute guiding and blessing him on his pathway back to home, back to Godhead.

It is okay to practice Krishna consciousness for the purpose of making ourselves happy?

Question from Bhagavatam class:It is okay to practice Krishna consciousness for the purpose of making ourselves happy?
Answer
Narottam Das Thakur has written in one of his songs:hā hā prabhu nityānanda, premānanda sukhī
kṛpābalokana koro āmi boro duḥkhī
"My dear Lord Nityānanda, you are always joyful in spiritual bliss. Since You always appear very happy, I have come to You because I am most unhappy. If You kindly put Your glance over me, then I may also become happy."
From this we can understand that it is certainly proper to practice Krishna consciousness for the purpose of making ourselves happy. Once we reach this point we can progress to a higher level of happiness in which we longer think about our own happiness and only think about how to make our spiritual master and Lord Sri Krishna happy. This stage is the perfection of happiness in which we taste unlimited bliss at every minute.

My Spiritual Journey in a Nutshell
As an American youth I was taught to believe in the. "American dream": Study hard, get a good education and a good job to get a good wife some good kids in a good house to enjoy a good life. But when I got to college I realized that this was not enough. I wanted to know what is the meaning of life, but no one could tell me. So I took to the path of self-realization and was blessed in 1968 with the Hare Krishna mantra and the worship of Radha and Krishna. (I did not know about ISKCON.) This inspired me to drop out of college and renounce the world to become a holy beggar in India. But on the way to India I realized that to renounce everything I had to ultimately renounce renunciation itself and accept something transcendental Thus I embraced the mission of delivering the world from chaos. For this purpose I adopted the life a singer/songwriter who in 1969 became recognized and very much appreciated. In 1971, seeking spiritual perfection, I followed the example of Lord Jesus Christ and prayed to God how I could become His perfect servant. Then God revealed to me path of pure Krishna bhakti as taught by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami. On the most auspicious day of 12 August 1971 he accepted me as his disciple. Now on his order and under his most expert guidance I have fully devoted my life for awakening pure love of God within my heart and for making the entire world Krishna conscious. To read about my journey in detail get my memoir:
