In his purport to Srimad Bhagavatam, Fifth Canto, Chapter 10, Text 24 Srila Prabhupada describes what is known as the mad elephant offense and how one a devotee rectify himself if he commits it. "Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu has said that by offending a Vaiṣṇava, one finishes all his spiritual activities. Offending a Vaiṣṇava is considered the mad elephant offense. A mad elephant can destroy an entire garden which has been developed with great labor. In the Srimad Bhagavata, 11th Canto, Chapter 3, Text 21 we find the following very potent instruction: tasmād guruṁ prapadyeta jijñāsuḥ śreya uttamam śābde pare ca niṣṇātaṁ brahmaṇy upaśamāśrayam "Therefore any person who seriously desires real happiness must seek a bona fide spiritual master and take shelter of him by initiation.
