Sex is for Procreation, Not For Recreation
The purpose of sex is to produce Krishna conscious children. Any use of it besides this is animal life.
There is a big misconception going around ISKCON these days that recreational sex is allowed as long as you don't kill any children that come from it. But any children produced by such recreational sex will not be inclined to be devotees because of the way in which they were conceived. Because they were conceived in sense gratification instead of Krishna consciousness their nature will be to desire sense gratification instead of Krishna consciousness. Such children will not be inclined to be devotees when they grow up.
Srila Prabhupada taught us what is the proper utilization of sex in the service of Krishna. The first thing is that sex is only with one's wife. And then the couple first takes permission from their spiritual master being trying for a child. After having gotten permission the couple can try for a child once a month 4-6 days after the wife's menstrual cycle (when she is most likely to get pregnant) and after the husband and wife have both chanted at least 50 rounds of Hare Krishna japa mala. Any sex besides this is illicit sex even for a married couple.
If these guidelines are strictly followed, saintly children will be attracted to take birth to the married couples. These will be children who will be inclined to totally surrender themselves to Lord Krishna and to make the whole world Krishna conscious. These are the kind of children that our movement needs.
So it is better to have recreational sex or procreational sex according to the above religious principles?
If someone thinks that they cannot be happy unless they can enjoy sex freely, they have zero understanding of what is Krishna consciousness.
