All Merciful Krishna

In the Tenth Canto, Fourteenth Chapter, verse 8, it is said:

tat te 'nukampāṁ su-samīkṣamāṇo
bhuñjāna evātma-kṛtaṁ vipākam
hṛd-vāg-vapurbhir vidadhan namas te
jīveta yo mukti-pade sa dāya-bhāk

"My dear Lord, any person who is constantly awaiting Your causeless mercy to be bestowed upon him, and who goes on suffering the resultant actions of his past misdeeds, offering You respectful obeisances from the core of his heart, is surely eligible to become liberated, for it has become his rightful claim."

If one adopts this mood, his mind will always be peaceful because he will perceive everything that happens to him as the special mercy of the Lord to purify him more and more.

Question: Senior Matajis Want to Be Called "Prabhu"

In our temple some of the senior Matajis want to be called "Prabhu." What is the proper etiquette in this regard?

P.D.D.

Answer: Proper Understanding of Senior

There are four different ways of understanding seniority: when someone was initiated, their physical age, their position in the society of devotees, and how much they have awakened their dormant Krishna consciousness. Although we honor all four types of seniority, the fourth type is the most important.

Srila Prabhupada instructed us:

"Except one's one wife, all women should be addressed as 'Mother.' This is civilization. Then there will be no corrupt relation. If you, from the very beginning, you establish your relationship with other women as mother, then there is no question of other relationship."

So if a woman is demanding that we not follow the instruction of Srila Prabhupada, she is not very advanced in Krishna consciousness, and is not a truly senior devotee in the most important sense of the term. Such a senior devotee will be respected for the years they have spent in Krishna consciousness and whatever position they hold, but their defective mentality should also be understood so that it is not imitated by those who are desiring to strictly follow Srila Prabhupada.
