Recently, a reader of your Thought for the Day column inquired into the Pahalgam terrorist attack and received an answer in the Question and Answer section. In the answer, it was stated that the problem of terrorism was caused by the corrupt nature of the material world.
The root causes of terrorism appear to be varied and numerous, starting from precise issues such as the rightful ownership of Kashmir up to more broad trends, such as the rise of religious-based politics in the form of the BJP.
But there was one thing that I would like to know— is it possible that at least some forms of terrorism (such as the rise of Hindu right-wing parties) are necessarily caused by a decline in spirituality instead of an excess of it? To phrase it more succinctly, could it be that people resorting to terrorism because they feel that their religion is no longer able to solve their problems, and this is their way of keeping it relevant in their lives?

We Have to Be the Loudest Quackers
6 May 2025
It is sometimes said that the duck who quacks the loudest gets the most crumbs. This principle is clearly at play in the material world. The money, sex, meat, and power propagandists have been quacking loudly—and by doing so, they’ve seized total control of the world society. Now, on the order of His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada, it is our duty to quack even louder. In other words, we must out-propagandize the materialists for the sake of delivering the poor suffering souls from the cycle of repeated birth and death. We must smash their bogus philosophies to smithereens—obliterate them completely—for they are all rooted in the false concept of “I am this body. This Duck is Quacking the Loudest

Answer
From: Hartford, Connecticut USAMy Dear Lalith,
Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Śrīla Prabhupāda.
Those who commit acts of terror in the name of religion, lacking genuine spiritual understanding, may believe they are defending or promoting their faith. But in truth, they are doing the opposite. By engaging in violence and hatred, they destroy the very essence and credibility of their religion, rendering it irrelevant in the eyes of sincere seekers. As the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam declares:
“Dharmaṁ tu sākṣād bhagavat-praṇītaṁ”
—True religion is that which is directly ordained by the Supreme Lord. (SB 6.3.19)
The relevance of any religion lies not in coercion or conquest, but in reviving its original purpose: to awaken pure love for God (prema pumārtho mahān). This is echoed in Bhagavad-gītā:
“man-manā bhava mad-bhakto mad-yājī māṁ namaskuru”
— “Always think of Me, become My devotee, worship Me and offer your homage unto Me.” (BG 18.65)
When one returns to this core teaching—whether from Christ, Muhammad, Moses, Guru Nanak, or Krishna—one sees that true religion is not many, but one in essence: to become a pure lover of God.
“sa vai puṁsāṁ paro dharmo yato bhaktir adhokṣaje”
—“The supreme religion is that by which one develops unalloyed devotional service to the Lord.” (SB 1.2.6)
Let us not be misled by sectarian labels. Let the standard of true religion be love—love that is selfless, universal, and centered on the Supreme Person.
I hope this meets you in the best of health and in a cheerful mood.
Your ever well-wisher,
Sankarshan Das Adhikari
