What is the Proper Definiation of "No Illicit Sex"?

There is a false teaching that is now being introduced in ISKCON called "the broader definition of no illicit sex." The bogus teaching is that recreational sex with your wife is okay as long as you don't kill any babies that are produced. But this is against what Srila Prabhupada has so mercifully taught us. We should follow what Srila Prabhupada has taught us, not some bogus teaching which is against the teachings of Srila Prabhupada. If we accept a bogus teaching, we are cutting off our relationship with Srila Prabhupada and destroying ISKCON.

The Srimad Bhagavatam tells us in the Seventh Canto, Chapter 4, Text 45: yan maithunādi-gṛhamedhi-sukhaṁ hi tucchaṁ

"Sex pleasure, which is considered by materialists to be the basic principle of enjoyment, is indeed insignificant. It is tenth class pleasure at best."

So unless we are trying to conceive a child we don't need the tenth class pleasure of sex when we can instead have the first class pleasure of Krishna consciousness. Those who are fixed in Krishna conscious are happy without sex. They engage in sex only if they want to have children. Regarding the proper utilization of sex Srila Prabhuada describes as follows in his purport to Srimad Bhagavatam, Fourth Canto, Chapter 27, Text 5 as follows:

"Kāma-kaśmala-cetasaḥ also indicates that unrestricted sense enjoyment is not allowed in the human form of life by the laws of nature. If one enjoys his senses unrestrictedly, he leads a sinful life. The animals do not violate the laws of nature. For example, the sex impulse in animals is very strong during certain months of the year. The lion is very powerful. He is a flesh-eater and is very strong, but he enjoys sex only once in a year. Similarly, according to religious injunctions a man is restricted to enjoy sex only once in a month, after the menstrual period of the wife, and if the wife is pregnant, he is not allowed sex life at all. That is the law for human beings."

He also explains as follows in his purport to Srimad Bhagavatam, Third Canto, Chapter14, Text 33:

",..sex life with one's wife is equal to prostitution if the regulations are not properly followed."

It should also be noted in this regard that Srila Prabhupada instructed that our grhasthas should chant at least 50 rounds of japa before attempting to conceive a child.

If some of our married devotees are not able to follow Srila Prabhupada's teachings in this regard, they should know that they are having a fall down into illicit sex. But we do not reject them. We encourage them to keep chanting and hearing and engaging in devotional service. By doing so they will get the higher taste of Krishna bhakti and will easily be able to give up the tenth class pleasure of sex. In this way they will utilize it only as Krishna intends for us to use it, for procreation.

Answers According to the Vedic Wisdom

(This is a written letter mailed from an inmate in a prison to whom we had sent a copy of the Bhagavad-gita As It Is.)

Question: Different Sects?

Dearest Sankarshan Das Adhikari,
Thank you for your blessings and copy of Bhagavad-gita. They have both been received with an open heart and mind. If I may open my mind has given way to some questions that I hope you will answer, as my access to resources here is very limited.

Are there different sects to Hinduism like in Christianity? And if so, what are the differences? Are the Vedas the same as Sutras? And are there any other reading materials available to me that could help me on my quest for theological knowledge in regards to Hinduism?

I apologize is my questions are elementary in their scope, but I do have a genuine interest and thirst for knowledge in regards to what Lord Krishna has left for us. I am going to sign off for now friend.... Peace, Love, and Happiness

Cordially yours,
David Delgado

Answer: Krishna Consciousness is Not a Sect

Dear David,

Please accept my blessings. I have received your letter dated 28 February 2023 and have noted the contents carefully.

I am very happy that you received a copy of Bhagavad-gita As It Is. Kindly mold your life according to its instructions and you find unlimited peace and happiness within your heart.

Yes, there are different sects of Hinduism, just there are different sects within every sectarian religion. But Krishna consciousness is transcendental all sects of religion. It is not Hinduism. Krishna consciousness is the perfection of all religions. A Christian will become a perfect Christian when he becomes Krishna conscious. A Hindu will become a perfect Hindu when he becomes Krishna conscious. A Buddhist will become a perfect Buddhist when he becomes Krishna conscious. A Jew will become a perfect Jew when he becomes Krishna conscious, etcetera, etcetera.

All the Vedic literatures are sutras (verses). This Vedic literature delivers us from this material world. And there are sutras that are not Vedic, which keep us entangled in this material world.

Bhagavad-gita is our basic book, but we do have many other literatures. You should first become very learned in the Bhagavad-gita before requesting other books.

Hoping this meets you well,

Your ever well-wisher,
